Gareth Thomas

Gareth Thomas Most capped Welsh rugby star

Born:
25 JUL 1974
Place of Birth:
Sarn
Famous For:
Most capped Welsh rugby hero
Trivia:
His nickname Alfie comes from the children's character ALF - Alien Life Form.
Biography:

Alfie is not just Wales's most capped player - he's a cult figure who inspires his teammates.

A powerful force from full-back, wing or centre, Thomas made his name with Bridgend RFC, leading them to the last league title in 2003 before the clubs were superceded by regional rugby.

Thomas joined the short-lived Celtic Warriors before moving to France and helping Toulouse win the Heineken Cup in 2005.

He returned to Cardiff in 2007 to join the Blues - he'd previously played one season of club rugby at the Arms Park.

Thomas made his international debut against Japan in July 1995, scoring a hat-trick of tries.

After falling out of favour during the reign of Graham Henry, 2005 was his highpoint.

He captained Wales at the start of the Grand Slam campaign before his involvement was cut short by injury, but later recovered to skipper the Lions for two tests in New Zealand in place of Brian O'Driscoll.

Thomas was confirmed as Wales captain for the 2007 Rugby World Cup - his third tournament - and was awarded his record 100th cap for the pool game against Fiji.

Always an emotional figure, there were fears for Thomas's health in February 2006 at the height of the "player power" row which resulted in Mike Ruddock's resignation as national coach.

Thomas collapsed following an explosive interview on BBC Wales's Scrum V TV programme - it's thought stress was the cause of a ruptured artery in his neck.
