David Davies

David Davies Olympic and Commonwealth swimming medallist

Born:
03 MAR 1985
Place of Birth:
Barry
School:
St Cyres, Penarth
Famous For:
Olympic and Commonwealth swimming medallist
Biography:

The swimmer from Barry adds Olympic silver in Beijing to his Commonwealth gold and bronze.

  • Battling Davies wins 10k silver - BBC Sport

Davies just missed out on gold after a brave performance in the men's 10k swim.

It follows his exploits in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne where he won the 1500m freestyle after coming third in the 400m event on the opening day.

He'd first emerged as a real contender with his bronze medal in the 1500m at the 2004 Olympics when he knocked 12 seconds off his personal best to smash the British and European records with a time of 14 mins 45.90 seconds.

Only three men had ever swum faster over the distance - including his hero, Australian gold medallist Grant Hackett.

David Davies on the podium"It's unbelievable," Davies told BBC Sport. "I'm shocked but really delighted. I said to my coach beforehand 'If I drop dead during the race just come and fish me out'. I wanted to give it my all and I gave it everything."

"It's the best two weeks of my life, in fact it's been the best year of my life. I'm never going to forget this."

A member of the City of Cardiff club and coached by Dave Haller, Davies took part in the Youth Olympics of 2001 and the European Junior Championships a year later.

He was voted best male newcomer in Europe in 2002, and discovered the longer distance events suited him.

In his first international meeting at senior level - the 2002 Commonwealth Games - Davies reached the final of the 1500m freestyle.

He followed it up with fourth place at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, going one better in Athens to clinch Olympic bronze.

I love David Davies - he is a brill swimmer. He used to come to my swimming club. Good luck in 2012

    Mrs Dale Lewis, Barry
My grandson Declan Ewington was presented in March 2009 with a cup for Most Promising Newcomer at Barry Swimming Club which as you know is where David Davies started his career. Declan who is only 7 wants to follow in his footsteps. I was wondering whether Mr. Davies could forward him a signed photograph or letter congratulating him on his achievement for his birthday which is March 24th. He would be so thrilled to receive something from him and who knows we may have another champion from Barry in the future.

You are a ledgend. When I saw you today in Windermere, it was like this isn't real and it really was. You deserved the gold in the 10k in the olympics, but I'm sure you will get it in london 2012:) In Windermere today you deserved the gold and you were amazing. I will always remember that day :D

    John from N-L-W

Well done David. Our family are delighted with your success and the wonderful effort you put into your achievement. We are sure that your name sake, David Davies of Barry Docks fame would be pleased too!!Keep it up.

    Josh D
What a shame! All the brits will be shamed because you did such a low class activity in China. You poured drinking water on a little Chinese girl's face just because she tried to remind you to take the medal.

    Jim Allison from Fife
I watched David's epic swim during the Olympics. A monumental achievement and a highlight of the games that will stay with me. I shouted at the TV and sang all the Welsh songs I could think of - and I am Scottish! He deserved Platinum, but had to settle for Silver.

    Valery Volgman
David congratulations! But also I feel disappointed about you improper behavior towards a Chinese lady. A lady told you everyone is waiting for you to join the metal ceremony and you doused her with a bottle of water. First she is a woman you are a man. Second, she is doing her job correctly and in due diligence, maybe also for free because she is a volunteer. Third, everyone was waiting for you and of course there are rules wherever you are, even if you are in a developing country where you may think you are superior than a local.

Ed Tilbury from Buckhurst Hill, Essex
Just as important as your brave swim and silver medal, were your very sporting comments and congratulations to the winner. Excellent sportsmanship. You are a credit to Wales, and to your parents. Good luck for he future.

David, you are an inspiration to sports fans the world over. If you could inspire kids to a higher degree of literacy too (some of these comments, however well intentioned, make me despair). Good luck for 2008!

    Mike Arnold Barry V.O.G.
well done Dave, you are a credit to your sport. Mike.

    Andrew Fawcett, Cowbridge
DD's swim at the Olympics, the fourth fastest of all time, I think, was absolutely incredible. He also beat his personal best by a half a second for every length of 30 lengths, which is in itself astonishing. There was a lot of pressure on him to win in Melbourne, and without a serious competitor, he still managed to beat 15 minutes. I would love to see him up against Grant Hackett again. Good luck for the future.

    Kathryn, Bridgend
Congratulations on your gold medal - you make us very proud to be Welsh.

    Alan from Batley
The BBC's coverage was abysmal - high profile 'stars' over and over again and the lesser known - but still superb athletes - like David - were unknown before the events and will (by the BBC) be forgotten afterwards. Where were the shots of David's wide-eyed disbelief at his medal in the final games profile pictures? Keep it up young man. Some of us will be watching your progress with interest - with or without the Beeb.

    Brian Bold from Australia
From an ex Porthcawl boy and a Pisces like you, born on 1 Mar 1932. "Good on you mate". Pity you had to come from the second best seaside resort in S.Wales!!!

    Junko Salmon from Oklahoma, USA
Congratulations, David! You made all the Welsh (and Welsh-at-heart) proud! You were like a little dragon (even named David) pursuing Goliath (no offence to Hackett or Jensen!) Best wishes for your future.
