Colin Jackson

Colin Jackson Record breaking 110m hurdler

Born:
18 FEB 1967
Place of Birth:
Cardiff
School:
Llanedeyrn High School
Famous For:
Record breaking 110m hurdler
"I've always wanted to end on my terms and I've done that." Colin Jackson
Trivia:
He was immortalised in song by reggae band Aswad in their Top 5 hit Shine - "Him a floating like a butterfly, the hurdling man - Yes, me-a-chat about Colin Jackson"
Biography:
One of Britain's greatest ever athletes who retired after a remarkable seventeen years at the top.

As a boy, Colin Jackson had an all-round talent for sport, playing football and cricket for the county and rugby and basketball for his school.

But he says it was athletics that came most naturally to him, his favoured event being the 110m hurdles.

After a brilliant junior career, he won his first major medal in 1986, silver for Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

He followed that with a World Championship bronze in 1987 and another silver at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 before he was crowned Commonwealth and European champion in 1990.

But there was disappointment at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 - he was expected to win but only managed seventh place.

Jackson bounced back in style, setting a world record time of 12.91 seconds for the 110m hurdles at the World Championships in Stuttgart in 1993.

That record stands to this day - as does his time of 7.30 seconds for the indoor 60m hurdles in 1994.

A string of titles followed, including four successive European titles from 1990 to 2002, but Olympic gold continued to elude him.

Jackson has now retired following the World Indoor championships in Birmingham in March 2003.

He's been praised by his fellow athletes for his focus, his dedication and, despite his achievements, being one of the nicest guys in sport.

True to his character, when Chinese athlete Liu Xiang finally broke Jackson's 110m hurdles world record in July 2006, the Welshman was full of praise.

"People have been asking me for 13 years how long I thought my record would last," he said.

"But it's always better to have a world record holder on the track performing and Liu Xiang's time is phenomenal."

Jackson received official recognition of his success in 1990 when he was awarded the MBE.

He was upgraded to a CBE in the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honours list - can it be long before Her Majesty utters the immortal words "Arise Sir Colin"?

Moment of Glory:
Breaking the 110m hurdles world record in 1993 - it wasn't bettered for 13 years
Off the Record:
Home Secretary David Blunkett had to apologise for a joke at an anti-racist meeting, where he said Colin Jackson had succeeded despite being Welsh.

I think Colin Jackson is such an inspiration and an awesome human being. He is a true athlete and it is fitting that Aswad whould immortalise him in song. I just loved the way he used to jump over the hurdles is such style, grace and composure. A true bullet. Colin Jackson (Welsh) and Haile Gebrselassie (Ethopian) are two of my all time favourite athletes. They are cool as human beings, not egotistic, and fantastic athletes.

Sara Bullock from Llanedeyrn
I really respect and admire Colin Jackson as he has always stood true to his roots and so it is because of this that I am leaving this comment, in the hope that he or other past pupils of Llanedeyrn will help the school. As many of you may know the school is under threat of closure and the community is trying its hardest to keep it open. Llanedeyrn High is a place well worth keeping alive!

I think that Colin Jackson is an inspiring role model - and a really nice guy too. He's inspired me to continue with my hurdling after a disappointing season due to a knee injury as he has proved that even with an injury you can pull through and do well. Colin is Great!

Richmal from Llandeilo
I have the utmost respect for Colin Jackson, what a great guy! I'd love to shake his hand and congratulate him, not only for his achievements in athletics but more recently for the wonderful opportunity he has provided for us all, to glimpse his ancestry - and what an ancestry!! - to share his emotions and to learn about history that has previously been deemed unimportant, but which is probably the most important aspect of history, the history of real people. I feel privileged, as a white Welsh person, to learn about the contribution that black people have made to Wales, and the world. Hope Colin will continue to make programmes that are not mere entertainment, but the stuff of life. Thank you Colin Jackson - you are a true hero and an icon for us all.

I attended the NACC (National Association for Care Caterers) Conference and Colin was guest speaker. I myself love Athletics & actually did hurdles myself. Colin advised what emotion he felt when breaking the world record - he said he wish he could have given all the emotion out to everyone. I went up to him after that after crying my eyes out the whole time through the speech, and told him we were there with him. A great icon for British athletics - he has made my day.

I was very impressed by Colin Jackson's maturity and positive attitude while he was invited speaker (a very good one I might add) on the "The One Show". His blend of dedication, matter-of-fact approach and sense of humour are unquestionably some of the qualities that make him a role model. I wish him all the best!

I admire Colin Jackson. I watched his progress over the years - he is an inspiration to all the kids everywhere and he seems to be a kind person too. I personally think he should have won the Strictly Come Dancing competition - he was fantastic on it, I so wanted him to win it. Still, he should be proud of himself - he was great to watch.

I think Colin is an incredible athlete! He has inspired many people that I know! I like my athletics but would never be able to do what he can! If he hadnt retired he would still be the great athlete which most of us know he is!

Jonathan Scourse from Llanedeyrn High School, Cardi
I reckon Colin Jackson was a good athlete and I think if he did not retire then he still would be today. If it wasn't for Mr Dyre he wouldn't be where he is today I think, cause Mr Dyre is a good PE teacher and he still is.

Gurpinder Dhaliwal
I once saw Colin Jackson in London. I was going to say hi, but I was so gobsmacked I didn’t. Also the man was doing his Christmas shopping - although I wish I had said 'hi' now. I think he’s an excellent athlete.
Fri Mar 12 12:02:14 2004

Michael Diop in Cardiff
How many events are there where the world record remains the same after 10 years as it does with Colin's 110m record? He has achieved so much for the sport and especially hurdling - which he has elevated to the status of the high status events such as the sprints. Sport will miss him on the track - although I look forward to his commentaries in the future.
Fri Mar 12 11:59:09 2004

Des Golton from Cardiff
About 25 years ago I was contacted by Mr Jackson senior to teach young Colin basic mathematics and physics. During our discussions I asked Colin if he was prepared to work. He said no as he had to train. Under those conditions I said to him your dad would be wasting his money paying me. It so turned out that Colin took the right decision - but if he wants to catch up on his maths and physics I am still his man!
