Phil Campbell

Phil Campbell Rock guitarist and Welsh Hero contender

Born:
7 MAY 1961
Place of Birth:
Treforest
Famous For:
Rock guitarist and Welsh Hero contender
Biography:
The guitarist with heavy metal band Motorhead was a surprise contender in a poll to find 100 Welsh Heroes.

Phil talks to Nicola Heywood Thomas on BBC Radio Wales (Need help with RealPlayer?)

Phil was originally a member of a band called Persian Risk which he founded in Cardiff in 1979 before getting the call to join Lemmy Kilmister's legendary rock outfit in 1984.

Motorhead have toured the world endlessly over the last twenty years, although legal wrangles have hampered their recording career in recent times.

The Treforest-born guitarist saw his fame spread beyond the band's fanbase after the Welsh Culture Minister Alun Pugh launched the 100 Welsh Heroes poll in September 2003.

The official Motorhead website got wind of the campaign and posted a message urging fans to nominate Phil.

He duly shot into the Top Five of the nominations rubbing shoulders with more likely contenders such as Aneurin Bevan, Owain Glyndwr and fellow Treforest boy Tom Jones.

Even so, Phil is a down-to-earth star who still lives in Pontypridd, saying he's relieved he can relax at home when he's not doing the day job.

Asked about his sudden fame, he said the poll results were "totally unbelievable" and thanked those who supported him.

Phil duly made it to the top 100 list when nominations closed in December 2003.

His remarkable run of success continued as he beat many more famous names to finish twentieth place in the final tally announced on St David's Day 2004.

Does this mean Phil is officially a bigger Welsh hero than the likes of Llewelyn ap Gruffudd, Tommy Cooper, Ioan Gruffudd and even JPR?

Played a few gigs in the Checkmate Caerphilly with Phil. That band was the Stoned Soul Party. 3 singers, 2 bass players , 2 drummers, 3 guitar players including VZ and Phil, 14 roadies, 1 Nigel Head Roadie, 1 Keyboards, Robert Ashton at the Desk with a big PA. Full dressing room. The gigs were great fun and remain only as a slight mist in the deepest folds of my drum battered brain. They were great gigs. That money really was for nothing ... the chicks cost a fortune though ... but then they always do!!!!

Corky & Nick Hughes - Cheltenham
Phil was always a live wire!!! Nick was in Persian Risk with him in the early days. Nick now plays and produces dance music - see - www.toadstool.org.uk. We will be catching up with Phil at the Cardiff Motorhead gig in November!

Phil is the man. I've been a metalhead since school, now 50 - never heard a better axeman, mega! Would like him to make a solo album, but stay with Motorhead of course. Next time you're in Glasgow, Phil, let me know so I can buy you a pint.

Kirsty Davies from Ebbw Vale
My band Dead Fashion has recently finished a demo CD which we recorded in Phil's house. Imagine my shock when i saw him ... he's a really nice guy... a bit mischief maker but hey, why not? I also met his wife and his son Todd, who recorded our album for us (at a very reasonable price, he's a genius) It was really nice meeting them all and all I can say is that I can't wait to go back for another session.

Cherryl, Pontypridd
A few years ago, on a beautiful summers evening, my family and I were sitting in the garden and could hear some quite loud MH music blaring across the gardens. We took a wander to see where it was coming from! Imagine our surprise to see Phil, Dane and a few friends jamming. His wife beckoned us to join them on the lawn, along with most of their neighbours by this time. What a night we had, I will never forget it as long as I live.

Andy 'Trooper' Fodor, Pontypridd

Met Phil several times mainly thru Wayne Cozzins. He's a top man - he don't do the rock star image thing. Great bloke - about time he done a gig up Beddau rugby again! Cheers.

I was in school with phils son Dane and if he is as determined as if dad he will make it big, v.good on the drums and very level headed considering his dad is extremely famous. keep up the good work phil and dane.

Jack from Glasgow
Not only is Phil one of the best guitarists in rock 'n' roll today he is a great character too.

VZ, Rhondda
I was Phil's best mate through school. We learnt to play guitar together, listened to the same music and we both still play in a band. My family have been on holiday with Phil's and he is a great dad and husband and to balance this with the schedule of one of the world's busiest bands is great. Well done mate!

Nick Bishop from Caerphilly
I was in school with Phil at St Michaels, Pontypridd and at Cardinal Newman. I can remember the school rock band featuring Phil and others playing after morning assembly. It was one hell of a noise!! My earliest memory was Phil loved horse racing when we were about 6 or 7. I wonder if he still likes the nags? Good to see how well he's done and that he's remained true to his roots and to his family despite being a huge star.

Craig Ridsdale
a bloody good gent. used to know him years ago from bogies in cardiff and in a rival band to persian risk (samurai). i bet hes still down to earth and one of the boys. well done phil ps wish i was bloody profesional too, better than a job

Juhani from Helsinki, Finland
I haven't met Phil, but everything that people have said here seems to confirm my first impression that he is the definition of cool...

Chris 'Lummy' Langan from Brighton
Phil, over the years you and your music has been and will continue to be an inspiration to more people than you probably realise. It has guided me through a lot of personal, domestic strife at various points throughout my life and for that I can only thank you. Your music gives people hope - you are truly blessed with talent. Much love to ya

Stephen Hadley from Pontypridd
As a rock guitarist myself, for many years I've supported Motorhead. To me, Motorhead are one of the finest rock/metal bands to come out of the 70s. Phil Campbell is a truly a down to earth Welsh Taffy! A good guitar player also. Long live Motorhead! And long live rock/metal. All the best to you Phil Campbell. You fully deserve to be a Welsh rock god, and a welsh hero!

Chris from Brighton
A true pioneer of rock'n'roll and a wonderfully talented and original artist. A real experience to see him and the band live......although could do with brushing up on the standard of the jokes he tells between songs. I love 'im!

Keith Wilkins, bristol
I saw motorhead in bristol last year, phil was a legend on the guitar. I'm going to see them this year as well now!

Pomy (From Hungary)
I guess Phil is one of the best guitarist around Rock N Roll nowadays. I love the way he's playin' and I guess that Motörhead tracks are good b'coz of 2 things: Easy to learn the main riffs, so you can play nearby a camp-fire and the solos are dif'rent 'nough to teach ya good... I gues it's ROCK N ROLL! POMY

Michael Mark, P.Eng. B.Sc. EE
Saw him in Winnipeg, Canada on April 22/05. Looks like he has lots of fun on stage! The concert was great and so was Ian.

Perry From California
Being a Motorhead fan for years I ran into Phil before a concert here in California, he came to the front of the club and handed a Margarita (I believe) to his friend who was working the t-shirt stand and took the time to sign an autograph for me. Made my day for sure.

Des Boyle, Ireland
I recently met Phil before the Motorhead gig in Dublin. He's a absolute gentleman and a great performer. Keep on rockin!!

calfyn mcwilling from llan

Eira from New Zealand
He is MY WELSH HERO!!!

Taylor from Los Angeles
Phil rocks!

Frank Gaudin in Ottawa, Canada
I'm a local stagehand and I've worked with many artists from Alice Cooper to Neil Diamond. Phil is the most friendly funny guitarist I've met. In Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, he is the same person in every town. NO FALESNESS ABOUT THIS CAT. He is the real thing. I look forward every year to see him and Motorhead in our country.

It's really nice to see him get nominated and he should not be surprised for all the fans that he has because he takes time to meet and greet people at every concert they do. All the best Phil - Good luck and congratulations on your nomination from all your Canadian fans, eh?

Yolanda from Zaragoza, Spain
He is a good professional as well as a good human being. He's survived in show business - through all the sacrifices that sometimes takes. He is a loving father and caring person in all he does. I wish more people could stay like this after so many years in the business.

Helen Bennett from Swansea
He genuinely cares about his fans and goes out of his way to sign autographs for, and talk to, the people who wait for him before and after gigs. He makes the effort that few other musicians do these days.

A devoted family man, Phil balances the life of a touring musician with his role as son, husband, and father very well. Phil has been married to the same woman since the early 1980s - how many other people in the entertainment industry can say that?

Following the tragic passing of his mother earlier in 2003, Phil missed just a few dates of Motorhead's North American tour to return to Wales for her funeral - true dedication to all that is important to him.

Phil deserves much more recognition than he gets. He's hilariously funny and one of the nicest people I have ever met!

Marco from Helsinki, Finland
He's the loudest Welshman I've ever heard... and a great guy, too. I've met him a couple of times and he's always polite and modest, even if he's in one of the world's only true rock'n'roll bands. The perfect gentleman, who represents Wales in an exquisite way!

Martin Barrett in Portland, Oregon, USA
When Motorhead come to town I always take Phil some British cider which he is a big fan of and he is genuinely thankful. Why is he a hero? He has stuck with this band thru thick and thin. To be as down to earth as he is AND be the guitarist with the band that are truly icons in the world of Pure rock'n'roll is a credit to his humility. Lemmy from Motorhead who is without a doubt THE iconclast rock'n'roller called Phil the 'heart and soul' of the band which is a huge tribute.

Phil also had to fill in the shoes of Motorhead's previous and legendary guitarist Fast Eddie... Phil was always compared to Fast Eddie and a lot of so called diehards never gave him credit for not being Eddie. Phil never left, Phil stuck the test of time, Phil went thru all the legal crap, Phil has consistently delivered, Phil has helped MH become the band they are today. He doesn't pose or posture. He gets on with it and continually delivers great music to MH and ultimately he is part of THE only live band left in the world that truly live the rock'n'roll lifestyle.

Phil has probably played more live gigs than Tom Jones and could party him under the table. YET he still manages to be a great father to his family. Credit where credit's due. Phil is truly THE Welsh hero.
