Huw Stephens

Huw Stephens Radio 1 DJ and TV presenter

Born:
1981
Place of Birth:
Cardiff
Famous For:
Radio 1 DJ and TV presenter
Trivia:
Huw sat his A level exams while working for Radio 1 and got the highly appropriate grades of BBC.
Biography:

Once Radio 1's youngest ever DJ at the age of 17, Huw is one of the station's champions of new, cutting edge music.

As a boy Huw used to tape himself presenting make-believe radio shows before having a crack at the real thing thanks to Rookwood Sound hospital radio in Cardiff.

He managed a friend's band called The Void and began writing for local music magazines and fanzines.

While doing a spot of work experience answering phones at BBC Radio Cymru he met fellow music fan and future Radio 1 co-host Bethan Elfyn.

They were in the right place at the right time when Radio 1 were looking for presenters with their fingers on the pulse of the Welsh music scene.

The big break came in autumn 1999 when Huw and Bethan landed the job of presenting the Session in Wales on Thursday nights to Radio 1 listeners in Wales.

Huw in particular impressed station bosses with his on-air skills and contacts with up-and-coming artists like Goldie Lookin Chain and Funeral For A Friend.

It wasn't long before he was heard on Radio 1 right across the UK filling in for DJs on holiday.

He's now got a regular slot on the station as one of its champions of new music, helping carry on the work of the late John Peel.

Outside of Radio 1 he remains steeped in music, presenting Welsh language programmes on BBC Radio Cymru and S4C.

Huw also writes about music for the Welsh press, and can be seen DJing at clubs, gigs and festivals across Wales and beyond.

Moment of Glory:
Joining Radio 1 to present the Session in Wales and graduating to a regular slot across the network.
Off the Record:
He got very drunk and threw up at his first gig - Gorky's Zygotic Mynci at the National Eisteddfod in Llandeilo in 1996.

Huw used to buy us alcohol from the offie down the road from Glantaf, the high school we both attended. He was (and remarkably still is) three years older and so (with ginger beard) had no problems buying us our tins. Lovely guy.

I have met Huw many times and know what a great and friendly guy he is. He is well-deserving of all his success and 1 reason being that he keeps in touch with the real music scene in South Wales by going to gigs locally, DJing at local venues and getting to know the local acts!

Huw always plays good music and promotes Welsh bands at its best.

As a Cardiff ex-pat it's great to see a local boy getting ahead in a world-famous organization like the Beeb. Good luck to you Huw, I hope you exceed John Peel's wonderful achievements!

John Hallam from Newport
Good luck to you Huw. Its good to see local welsh musicos getting on in the beeb. John Peel's shoes are a tall order. Forget all that hype and just be yourself.
