Newport
Famous For:
Chart-busting rap crew from our newest city

Biography:

You knows it, clart - an overnight success that's been twenty years in the making, these rappers have put Newport on the map with their tongue in cheek rhymes about everyday life in the city.

  • Noble Knows It - when Roy Noble met GLC

GLC's roots go back as far as 1983, when Chon Ben-Wa Balls (aka Mr Love Eggs) used to tape dialogue from TV shows and overdub it with his favourite swear words.

Thirteen years later, co-founder and beatmeister extraordinaire Dwayne Xain Zedong began creating electronic music with his Rave Generator.

A chance meeting between Xain and Eggsie in a college car park ultimately led to the creation of Goldie Lookin Chain.

Five years later, GLC began to come into its own, with another 21 members joining up to add their own styles and rhythms to the fast-expanding collection of urban poetry.

The eight piece core of the crew consists of: Eggsie (Mr Love Eggs), Xain (Dwayne Xain Xedong), Adam Hussein, Two-Hats, Mike Balls (Hardest Man in Soccer Violence), Billy Webb, Mystikal and Maggot.

Other footsoldiers no less celebrated include: DCI Burnside, Leeroy Fashions, Lloyd Ganja 9T9, 38DD Killa, BBJ (Big Baby Jesus), Eugene the Genius, Mr Compact, MC Flatpress, Cannsie-T, Dipper Nan, Mac Dad, One-Step Down, Will Dionysus and Adam's Nan.

Coming over like a Welsh Wu Tang Clan with a touch of Viz, GLC became local heroes by celebrating the mundane reality of Newport life - from shellsuits and soft drugs to discount stores and "seven seater scum buses".

Their fame spread via a series of hometown pub gigs, home produced CDs and MP3s available from their website - www.youknowsit.co.uk

GLC first hit the headlines in November 2002 with a spurious story in Heat magazine claiming they'd recorded a track with teenage songstress Charlotte Church.

Following furious reaction, media attention and a printed apology, GLC were on their way to the big time.

Support slots with Super Furry Animals and The Darkness raised their profile further, and they signed to a branch of the giant WEA record company in March 2004.

The Newport massive broke into the UK Top 40 in April with the single Half Man Half Machine.

But they made a bigger splash in August when Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do crashed in at Number 3.

And which other band would have the brass neck to call their major label debut album Greatest Hits?

The band's showbiz credentials were further boosted in January 2006 by Maggot's appearance in Celebrity Big Brother, coming a very creditable third.

But it wasn't enough to save GLC from being dropped by their record company Atlantic in March 2006 following disappointing sales of their second album.

Top 3 hit with the single Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do
