Dr Gwynfor Evans

Dr Gwynfor Evans Turned Plaid Cymru into a political force

Born:
1912-2005
Place of Birth:
Barry
Famous For:
Turned Plaid Cymru into a political force
"Britishness...is a political synonym for Englishness which extends English culture over the Scots, the Welsh, and the Irish." Dr Gwynfor Evans
Trivia:
Although trained as a solictor, he worked as a commercial gardener until his retirement.
Biography:
Few people have done more to promote the cause of Welsh nationalism, the language and its culture to ensure its survival into the 21st century.

The son of a department store owner, he was born in Barry but grew up in Carmarthenshire. It wasn't until he was 18 that he began to learn Welsh.

His political activities began at college when he set up of a branch of Plaid Cymru. As a pacifist and Christian, he refused to join the armed services during the Second World War.

In 1945 Dr Evans became president of Plaid Cymru, and led campaigns for a Welsh Government and against plans to flood a village near Bala to create a reservoir for Liverpool's water supply.

Despite his failure to stop the Tryweryn reservoir opening in 1965, his prominent role in the campaign helped him become the first ever Plaid Cymru MP in 1966 with his shock victory in the Carmarthen by-election.

It stunned the political world and the Labour Government in particular, which realised that growing nationalism posed a real threat to its dominance in Wales.

Dr Evans lost his seat in 1970 but regained it in 1974, losing it again in 1979. But he soon proved that he was no less an effective force outside Parliament.

In 1980, he dropped a political bombshell by pledging to "fast to the death" if the new Conservative Government did not reverse its decision against setting up a Welsh language television channel. Shortly before the appointed day, Margaret Thatcher backed down and gave the go-ahead for the creation of S4C.

Dr Evans stepped down as Plaid Cymru president in 1981 and turned his attention to writing, including Welsh and English versions of his autobiography.

He received a string of tributes on his 90th birthday in 2002, including this from the current Plaid Cymru leader Ieuan Wyn Jones.

"Gwynfor's inspiration and leadership of Wales over the years makes him one of the greatest Welshmen of any period in the history of Wales."

He died in April 2005 at the age of 92.

Moment of Glory:
Winning the 1966 Carmarthen by-election, although his threat to fast to ensure the creation of S4C was hailed as unique in forcing a U-turn by Margaret Thatcher.

Diolch am byd Gwynfor! Our country misses a true hero!

Carys Llywelyn, Llandysul
Gwynfor was a Christian pacifist who did not believe that any cause was worth killing another human being for. He was however prepared to give his own life - once when he went to a potentially dangerous mission to Cambodia in protest against the bombing of Vietnam and once when he was prepared to fast until death in the television campaign.

Nic Hodges from Barry
Gwynfor was great. A true internationalist.

Robert Morgan from Barry
A true and honest Welshman a supreme patriot? As long as he didn't have to fight for it you mean. Many true and honest Welshman died so that the likes of Gwynfor Evans could hide behind Nationalism.

Bob from Cardiff.
Was 'tucked up' by Thatcher, a single channel for all Welsh language T.V. was just what she and all non-Welsh speaking viewers wanted. Also his behaviour in the war was regrettable. Refusing to fight, and instead growing tomatoes in the peace and quiet of west Wales, upset a lot of Welsh soldiers only some of whom survived the war.

It is because of Mr Evans and his late wife we have a sense of pride in Wales, it is vital we become an independent country and like Ireland prove English colonials wrong.

Trefor Jones, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, Lloegr
Diolchadau i Dduw (Thank the Lord)

Gwen from Gwynedd
His dedication was an inspiration to all Celts not just those from Wales.

Rutthy from Los Angeles, California
I'm sad that Gwynfor Evans is no longer with us but very grateful that he was with us for his long, very well-spent life. He has left us a beautiful legacy. May it inspire many to follow in his footsteps. Diolch yn fawr, Gwynfor.

Peter from London
What other twentieth century Welsh politician contributed more to the continuing life and culture of Wales?

Andrea McCulloch, originally Fairwater, Cardiff, n
I remember as a schoolgirl the excitement generated when Gwynfor won Carmarthen in 1966. A literary- minded schoolboy wrote a poem about it in The Cantonian, the Canton H.S. magazine, and two lines stay with me, nearly forty years later - "Gwynfor Evans! Yes, Gwyn for Ever! Serve the English? He'll never, never." No great artistic merit there, perhaps, but it shows the grip that Gwynfor took on our imaginations at the time. Gwynfor was the best type of Nationalist, a man who realised that loving your country did not mean that you had to hate others as a matter of course. Although, I have to say, I would have liked to have heard his thoughts on Margaret Thatcher, off the record. When the great of Wales are spoken of, may his name be remembered. Rest in peace, Gwynfor.

Ian, Swansea
When Wales needed a figurehead to fight its corner and save its native language, Gwynfor put his body on the line. He was without question the greatest Welsh patriot of the 20th Century and a role model for all nations, who seek self-determination through debate and democracy.

Gethin Evans, Brummana, Lebanon
The end of a remarkable man and given his age not unexpected. His memory and achievements will live after him and will be his testimonal - his love of country, people, peace and his personal integrity should be a lesson to us all.

david brown from Bournemouth
Gwynfor Evans has always been an inspiration to me from his byelection victory in Carmarthen in 1966. It was wonderful to have such a gentle, Christian man in politics, but someone who stood up for his principles. Who can forget him causing Mrs Thatcher's only u-turn! I met him once, quite accidentally whilst walking over the cliffs above Llangranog, and I was privileged to have a little chat with him about the CYD organisation which helped to integrate incomers (which I was at the time) into Welsh communities. Diolch yn fawr Gwynfor - you will not be forgotten!

C Jenkin - Truro, Kernow
Gwynfor Evans was an inspiration to all Celtic Nationalists including those in Cornwall. Gwynfor Evans gave great support to my father Richard Jenkin in establishing and supporting Mebyon Kernow - The Party for Cornwall. He has an international significance.

Junko Salmon, USA
He fought so hard and long for Wales with determination and love. He is one of the greatest Welsh heroes.

Huw from Cwmtwrch
I'm sorry to see him go.

peter williams from Delaware
Despite idiotic comments from Rog (no doubt totally ignorant of Welsh culture), Gwynfor's support of Plaid will be long lasting. The mantle has been passed on to a select few who care about their country.

David Goddard from New Mills Derbyshire
As a teenager I took part in the Plaid Cymru Carmathen campaigns of the 1960s and heard Gwynfor speak on many occasions. He spoke eloquently of Wales and her place among the nations of the world. He inspired us then as youngsters, and always will.Diolch yn fawr Gwynfor.

Alun Thomas Newport S Wales
What would Wales be like today if Gwynfor had not been there to lead the country over four decades??. We would still be under the thumb of England and Westminister. One of the greatest politician and friend Wales has ever had. Diolch yn fawr Gwynfor am dy egni a'th weledigaeth

Mike from Bryncethin
A true and honest Welshman a supreme patriot and a great man

Rog from Pontypridd
A decent chap but his party is a waste of breath!

Chris Condon, Cwmgors
Gwynfor Evans, quite simply, is an inspiration.

David Wilton from Dinas Powys
He more than anyone in the 20th century kept the flame of Welsh identity alive. He worked against the destruction of rural communities for water, and his determination about the need for S4C can not be forgotten.
