Founder of the Libearty Campaign, Victor has dedicated his life to campaigning for bears.

A dancing bearRealising there was very little work being done for bears, Victor set up the Libearty Campaign in 1991. Initially his campaign focussed on helping to stop the tradition of bear dancing in Greece and Turkey.

It expanded to cover the mistreatment of bears worldwide, including overcrowded containment of bears in China and Korea, bear baiting in Pakistan, and bear parks in Japan.

I am very compassionate towards animals and wonder constantly what else I could do besides donating money. I just completed an undergraduate in media and was wondering if you or anyone else working for the conservation and protection of animals might want my services. Thank you for devoting your life to bears.

We need more Victor Watkins in this world.

Savas Karakas from Istanbul, Turkey
Thank you so much for stopping this hellish torture called bear dancing. I grew up watching those majestic animals forced to do stupid tricks on our streets. Their noses torn, jaws broken and with stereotypic actions, all now live happily in the bear sanctuary. I have witnessed what men are capable of.. both the evil and the good. I am looking forward to meeting you personally and shake your hand that freed so many bears. Please go on.

Nicola Rose from West Sussex
I have a great love of bears and have many a sleepless night thinking of them, their pain and suffering. I just cannot comprehend how a human being can be so cruel and unfeeling. Keep up the wonderful work, Victor - you have my thoughts with you.

Merryl F Goldman, Alexandria, NH, USA
God bless people like you ... you are doing such wonderful work and I admire you so much!! I sometimes lay awake at night wondering why people have such cruelty in their hearts? How can humans treat animals as so much garbage ... if there weren't people like you in this world it surely would be horrible.

Louise Hayward from Auckland New Zealand
Victor, you are the best. No one else could have achieved what you have achieved. To see the difference in the bears once they have reached their new sanctuaries, is a sight to behold. Their newly glossy coats is a testamony to you and your humble but remarkable successes.

i was very angry reading about the plight of the polar bears in northern canada in the scottish daily mail. how long will it take the world to realise what we have lost and are losing. the only way we will soon be able to see these magnificent animals is in pictures, films, and victorian zoos. i hope you continue with your amazing fight.

Sasia Waite from Swindon
I am a great animal lover, and admire your work completely. Bears are intelligent, gentle giants, that don't deserve the various traumas they have to go through for "entertainment". I think your work is inspiring and I hope you continue to save the amazing creature, the bear.

Daphne Rethmeier, Voorburg, The Netherlands
I want to tell you how much I admire the fantastic work you do to help animals in need. I just saw your documentary about the bear parks in Japan. I had already seen it once but was just as shocked as I was the first time. I am already a member of the WSPA but am wondering what I personally can do to help you with your task to help one of the most amazing animals on this earth, the bear, who deserve a lot more respect from us humans.
