Pugsley

Pugsley, former landlord of the Plough and Harrow in the Vale Famed pub landlord in the Vale

Born:
5 FEB 1962
Place of Birth:
Rhoose
School:
Llantwit Major Comprehensive
Famous For:
Famed pub landlord in the Vale
"World domination is mine!" Pugsley
Trivia:
Pugsley started out life in the meat trade after his Religious Education teacher exclaimed that he looked like a butcher.
Biography:
Following an eclectic and chequered career, Pugsley found his calling as landlord of one of the Vale of Glamorgan's best loved pubs.

He was no stranger to pub life, having spent eight childhood years in a pub in Boverton.

After leaving school, Pugsley got work as a slaughter man in Bridgend and an apprentice butcher in Llantwit Major.

Since then, Pugsley describes his life as a series of happy accidents. These involved running a fish and chip shop in Devon; working in Benidorm; setting up Llantwit Major's first surf shop in 1987; and completing a performing arts course in Margam.

After he finished his studies, he harboured dreams of becoming a film director, and made plans to visit Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival.

It was at this time that a friend was selling his pub in Monknash. Pugsley jumped at the chance and found his true calling.

The Plough and Harrow then became the hub of the surrounding community, known for its selection of real ales, hearty food, warm atmosphere, live music, and of course, for its larger-than-life landlord.

Under his stewardship, the pub won a host of CAMRA awards including Best Pub in Wales 2003, and Second Best in the UK.

At a time when local pubs are closing down daily, Pugsley continued to wave the flag for their importance in the community, and ventured online with his campaign for local pubs and real ales.

He left the Plough and Harrow in April 2004 and set up the gastropub Illtud 216 in Llantwit Major, although it has now been taken over by new proprietors.

Pugsley is now back in business as landlord of the Horseshoe Inn, Marcross.

Moment of Glory:
Consistently winning the Best Pub of Wales award

Dave from Pontyclun
Former Llantwit boy, many good nights at the Plough and many good meals at Illtuds. Pugs, you are the man.

Eric Lauderdale from California
I lived in Llantwit from 87-95 and know Puggs well. He came to visit my wife Lindy and our daughter Hannah, here in California and created an overnight legend for himself as only he could do. And what else would anyone expect of him. If you want another good story, ask him about introducing full contact Rugby to the lads in our living-room!!

I know of Pugsley. He a great bloke, and the Plough and Harrow is not quite the same without him. Imagination is the key with this fella.

Hugh from Vancouver Canada
Who else could fill a pub with tons of sand and hold a beach party? I have a hand sewn tapestry of the Plough on my wall. Fond memories...

Tom Williams from Wick
The Plough really ain't been the same since Pugs left. Never failed to have a good nite out down there. Remember Hazy Days anyone? plenty of good nights on that stuff. Cheers Pugs.

Gerbs
Pugsley is the chosen one! He did everything for the boys!

Nathan Dew
Pugsley, what a guy - you will be missed, bro. As I live in New Zealand now, the Plough won't be the same.

Comments like 'Its like a b****y library in here!' when the pub is quiet and people are reading papers or ' more and more like a kindergarden' when loads of kids are running around! Ah yes - I'll miss that. Looking forward to my meal in Illtud 216.

Pugsley has now opened a new venture in Llantwit Major, Illtyd 216, a new gastro-pub based in a mediaeval kiln house. Although only welcoming guests since June 10th he has consistantly seen full houses and satisfied customers. More info can be found here http://www.llantwit.com/Pugs/illtyds.htm

Tom & Judi from St. Clairsville, Ohio, USA
Visited the Plough and Harrow during the first day of our holiday in Wales last October. There is nothing like a pint of ale with your faggots & mushy peas! Great pub!

Craig & Liz. Dunedin NZ
There's great pubs and there's great landlords. Occasionally fate combines the two and the chemistry is something to behold. Sweet as... As they say down here.

Jeff Baker
I miss Pugsley. I will also miss "The Plough and Harrow" if,as you state, it has been moved to Marcross

James - Llantwit Major, now Cardiff.
I used to go to Pugsley's surf shop to buy surf gear and skateboards, I used to go to the Plough for the parties in the summer and take girlfriends there to impress them with its old world charm. Pugsley has shouted at me in the middle fo the night for nicking his sausages and bbq'ing them, and sung songs about peaches from China to my Greek girlfriend. What kind of guy can you say that about? A great one!

Steve, Landlord of the Pelican @ Ogmore
Landlords don't get any better than Pugs, fact! Anybody who can create such an atmosphere, following, keep great beer and beer great must be taken notice of. Drinking heavily is not easy either! Your achievements won't be repeated by anyone else.

The boys from Southerndown Underground
A good man will be missed.

Garry David from Wick
Pugs will be sadly missed. He looked after his regulars, and always kept a pub with great atmosphere. All the best with your real beerbox venture!!

A Local
A huge loss to the village of Monknash.

Steven from Cathays, Cardiff
A huge shame for the best pub in the Vale.

Squiz from Llanmaes
In the decade he has been host, the Plough and Harrow has consistently won CAMRA awards. He has kept the flame alive of one of the great Welsh dishes - faggots and peas - and tapped many a spile. His latest enterprise, flogging real ale online around the world, has seen him garnering plaudits from such media giants as The Echo and Radio Five Live. He's a big-hearted man in all senses of the word, promoting new music in and around the Vale, helping out local causes and generally getting involved in the local community.
