Only Men Aloud!

Only Men Aloud! Winners of BBC TV's Last Choir Standing

Place of Birth:
Cardiff
Biography:
The Cardiff-based choir beat strong Welsh competition from Ysgol Glanaethwy to win BBC TV's musical talent competition Last Choir Standing.

  • Training BBC presenters to sing as Only News Aloud

Only Men Aloud! was started in 2000 by Tim Rhys-Evans who wanted to create a young male voice choir unafraid to tackle music not usually performed by traditional male voice choirs.

Consisting of teachers, musicians, students, a gardener and a pharmacist - the lads like to take time out from rehearsals to play rugby and football.

With a repertoire ranging from 15th Century to current day, Tim believes there should be no barriers placed on choral singing and they want to prove to their audience that choirs can be fresh and funky.

Viewers of Last Choir Standing saw the choir perform a range of tunes from Cwm Rhondda to Don't Rain On My Parade from the musical Funny Girl.

But when the contest came down to a north-versus-south Wales final two, it was a tear-jerking rendition of the ballad All By Myself which gave the men of Cardiff the edge over the young mixed choir from Bangor.

Following their victory in Last Choir Standing the guys look set to hit the big time, with an appearance at the Royal Variety Performance already confirmed.

The choristers have signed a multimillion pound record deal with Universal, but hope to fit their musical commitments around their day jobs.

They also lent a hand to some of the BBC Wales Today presenters who sang live for Children in Need 2008 as Only News Aloud.

Richard Melintz from Washington DC, USA
Heard only the last couple numbers (unfortunately) that you preformed at The Folk Life festival on July 5, 2009. Wonderful. Congratulations. In Washington DC we are fortunate to have the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington (GMAC) of which I am very proud. Both that organization and yours appear to share the sentiment that a male chorus need not restrict itself to Gregorian chants. Chants are nice, don't get me wrong. But all music is great. And I certainly enjoyed the music you made today!

    Dorothy Webb from Marske, Cleveland
Hubby and I saw you at City Hall, Newcastle, in May 2009. What a fantastic show you lads gave and with Amy Nuttall singing Hello Dolly I never wanted it to end. Had a long journey back home but we were on a high so it didn't matter how late we got home!

    Carol from Kingswinford
Hi boys, saw your concert at the Symphony Hall in May 2009. My husband, friends and I thought you were amazing, you moved us to tears one moment and then laughing at your "Drunken Sailor" the next. Well done, can't wait for you to come back to Birmingham.

    Geraldine Robinson from Tamworth, Staffordshire

Shirley Cole from St Leonards on Sea
What beautiful music. Only Men Aloud have the fantastic traditional sound of a Welsh male voice choir and soooo much more. I recorded on video the songs from the final, and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time I replay "All By Myself". It almost makes me cry each time I hear it. Worthy champions.

    A Griffiths, Caerphilly
Superb but I have a theory. In one of the rounds, choir received criticism by judge who was unsure if it was choral presentation or entertainment. Noticed in final that presentation was that of typical traditional choir ie, standing still in line even though music was not the usual. Just wondering if that affected final vote - whatever they did was OK by me! Congratulations to both Welsh choirs but my favourite won.

    Julian Price, Brynmawr
I saw these guys singing at the Assembly and when they sang the Welsh national anthem the hairs on the back of my neck stood up - they were awesome. I made sure that I voted for them - they deserved it. Well Done guys.

    Dave Morgan from Peacehaven
What a choir!! They shone on every performance, having been in a choir myself I know that they must have practised for hours to get it together as they certainly did throughout, Well Done Lads and lets see more of you on tv.

    Kim Holt from Munich Germany
Watched Last Choir standing avidly for weeks hoping that WALES would live up to their reputation of being the best singers and was proved right!!! I'm a Very proud welshwoman living here in munich!!

    Rosie Jackson-Kilham
As a Welsh person living away from Wales, I loved watching the two Welsh choirs week after week. My national pride is at an all time high. Well done to 'Only Men Allowed,' but also to the wonderful school choir 'Ysgol Glanaethwy.'

    Rees, Joan, Aberdare
I thoroughly enjoyed the programme each week, and thought that both choirs were worthy finalists. However, I did vote for our Cardiff boys.

    john wilce from Estepona, Spain
WELL DONE NORTH AND SOUTH WALES!The Welsh & The Spanish are exact oppositesThe Spanish field great soccer teams, butcan't form a decent choir................

    Jim Woolley from Hastings
My wife and I thought they would win right from the start, although many of the others were really outstanding. We were in Cardiff and visited Cardiff Bay on August Bank Holiday Monday where to our great surprise Only Men Aloud! appeared as if from nowhere. They performed a few songs from their repertoire, and later played volleyball against two of the professional ladies team who were there for a contest being held that day. What good sports they were, and all during the afternoon they mingled and chatted with the crowds. We voted for them of course, and their win was well deserved. Long may they carry on with their entertaining.

    John Wilce from Estepona, Spain
Well done north and south Wales! The Welsh and the Spanish are exact opposites. The Spanish field great soccer teams, but can't form a decent choir...

    Les
I knew you'd do it! From the first episode you and Ysgol Glanaethwy were in a class of your own. Technically superb. Congratulations boys!! I've never heard such a rich combination of beautiful voices, and your top tenors are truly world class. Wonderful!!!
