Daily life at home in the nineteenth century would have been very different to the way we live. Tal y Braich is a real cottage in the foothills of Snowdonia and would have been typical of houses in the area, made of local stone and slate because these materials were cheap and easy to get hold of.
The range would have been the heart of the house, burning coal to provide heat and to cook the family meals. Running a home was hard work without gas, electricity or running water.
Tal y Braich is a small cottage, but census records show that in 1891 it was home to two separate families - eleven people in total.
