Food and farming

One of the snowdonia 1890 children carrying a cockerel

Families living in cottages like Tal y Braich in the nineteenth century would have kept their own animals to provide food. They would have kept pigs, cows, sheep and chickens providing them with meat, milk and eggs.

It was the women and children who looked after the animals, and the important vegetable garden. They had to produce almost everything they needed to eat themselves and it was very hard work.
