Snowdonia 1890 children at school

There were changes to the education system in the nineteenth century and in 1880 a law was passed requiring children aged between 5 and 10 to attend their local school daily. Families had to pay for the children to go and it would have cost the family living in Tal y Braich a penny a week for each child.

School life was very different in 1890. Teachers were very strict and children would have been quite scared of them. Lessons were in English so if a child spoke even a word of Welsh he or she would be breaking the school rules. Some schools used the Welsh Not, a piece of wood hung around the neck, as punishment for speaking Welsh.
