The BBC Singer of the World in Cardiff Education Project is an excellent way of using music right across the curriculum. It offers primary schools in the Cardiff area a chance to really get involved in the Competition |

The project aims to engage children in the musical skills of listening, arranging, composition and performance, and they learn about other countries and cultures while meeting and working alongside professional musicians from around the world.
This year, Moorland Primary School, which has an ongoing exchange programme with a school in Helsinki, adopted the Finnish baritone Tommi Hakala. Other singers and schools involved were: Lauren Skuce (USA soprano) - Adamsdown Primary Erin Wall (Canada) - St Patrick's Primary School Pavel Baransky (Ukraine) - St Monica's CIW Primary (Pavel took part before he was forced to pull out of the Competition due to ill health) Edyta Kulczak (Poland) - Radnor Road Primary Matthias Rexroth (Germany) - Ysgol Pencae Tania Kross (Netherlands) - Bryn Deri Primary Tae-Hyun Kim (Korea) - St Paul's Primary Cleo Mitilineou (Greece) - Ninian Park Primary Angela Marambio (Chile) - St Francis RC Junior Each school was given a folk song from one of the countries represented by a singer in the Competition. Two or three players from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales then worked with the class teacher to teach the song to the pupils and compose a new arrangement, and the children used singing, movement, percussion and classroom instruments to add new sounds, textures and colours to their song.
The schools performed the new compositions twice during BBC Singer of the World in Cardiff 2003.
Each competitor visited the school linked to their country, listened to their folk song and chatted to the pupils about life in their country. The project culminated in a special concert at the New Theatre on Friday 27 June for all the contestants, featuring every participating school.
The project was a collaboration between the education departments of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and St David's Hall, where it is Orchestra-in-Residence. This year they welcomed the additional contribution of the New Theatre.
