Tommi Hakala (Photo: Brian Tarr)

Finland's Tommi Hakala in Concert 1
previousnext

Tommi Hakala not only faced the challenge of opening this year's competition at St David's Hall but he threw down the gauntlet to all the men taking part. Elegant yes, tails no. Hurrah! Come on men - you can do it. Just say no to white tie and tails!

His suit jacket was perfectly proportioned so that he appeared even taller than he already is. It has a Nehru collar, slightly cut away to reveal a crisp white shirt. Instead of a tie, a black cord was held in place at the throat with a silver clasp. Based on graphics from the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, it looked like a shield boss and was reminiscent of the Celtic knots found in these parts. Uncluttered, elegant, individual.

Tommi was controlled in his gesture, making everything count but without the semaphore that could put Carlo Rizzi's podium-position in jeopardy. Despite being first on, he appeared relaxed and comfortable on stage, remembering to thank the trumpet soloist who duetted with him in the Bach piece. Good manners and taste - that's the challenge for the others!
