Progressing from being a teaching assistant to becoming a teacher

Q: Can teaching assistants progress into teaching?

A: Yes, you can undertake further training to obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are different ways to obtain QTS but you will need to have a degree. You can train with the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP), the Registered Teacher Programme (RTP) or the postgraduate initial teacher training courses.

If you're worried about the time commitment, bear in mind that you can study full-time, part-time or take a flexible course, which allows you to train when it suits you best. You can even learn on the job and get paid while you train. There are also special courses for graduates who want to make fast progress in their careers.
