Using the computer for schoolwork

seren"Seren, aged 13, from Llantrisant, Mid Glamorgan, uses the computer for schoolwork.

"I use the computer for different things but mainly for schoolwork. I get all my information from the Internet. I did two posters for French on my computer at home - one on the school and a wanted poster. The teacher put them up on the wall for everyone to see.

I did a History pamphlet for the Urdd on the Tudors, and a poster on Henry VIII for school - which also went up on the wall in the classroom. I also did an A3 poster for English on Romeo and Juliet. I did all the writing and pictures on the computer and then I cut them out and stuck them onto a piece of A3 card. I also make cards for people's birthdays and thank you cards for prezzies I've had.

I use Google search engine for my research because it's fast and easy to use.

It's handy for checking my emails and to log on to the clubs I've joined (Nick, Vizzavi, Nokia). The Nick site has loads of good games. I joined Vizzavi and Nokia because they give me info about my mobile.

I usually spend about an hour a day on the computer if I get the time... I've got lots of homework to do.

I have a lot of favourite sites, including The Simpsons, Southpark, Nickelodeon, Monkeycrap. Joe Cartoon is funny as well - there's loads of jokey stuff on it.

I am quite aware of safe surfing as I read an article in a magazine about paedophiles in chat rooms and how they pretend to be your age and don't talk about sex to scare you off. I don't open things (pages and emails) that look dodgy if I can help it. I only go to sites that I know of and I don't go to any adult sites... I'm not interested in them.

I can't type as fast as my mum, but I'm one of the best in my IT classes, because most of the kids in my class type with one finger. I can kind of touch type, but I look at my hands."

Advice
"If you're surfing the net, and if you go into chat rooms, people aren't always who they seem to be - be careful."

Seren, Llantrisant
