Key subjects

It's true that Wales does not suffer from the acute teacher shortage that affects some regions in the UK. But teachers in certain key subjects are always in demand. These include Mathematics, Science, Design and Technology, Information Technology and Modern Languages.
There is also a shortage of male teachers in primary education, as well as a shortage from minority ethnic groups.
And there is always need not only for Welsh language teachers but also for those who can teach other subjects through the medium of Welsh. In fact, an incentive payment of £1,200 is available for students who undertake Initial Teacher Training in Welsh.

Take newspaper reports on how much teachers earn with a pinch of salt. The figures are usually based on average earnings so some teachers will earn far more, and others far less. To get an accurate picture, check the current pay scale and read the DfES's latest document on pay and conditions. For an alternative view, read what the National Union of Teachers has to say.
