Noble's Knick-Knacks

History of the World logo

The BBC has launched its landmark History of the World season.

As part of this ambitious project, Roy is asking you to send in photos of items which will tell the history of Wales with YOUR objects. It could be something personal to you that tells the story of the past.

A small paperweight with a picture of the ocean liner RMS Mauretania.

Welsh writer, actor and musician Boyd Clack's object is a paperweight from the ocean liner RMS Mauretania, sister ship to the Lusitania. The paperweight belonged to Boyd's grandfather, who was known as Dan The Yank, who lived for a time with the Shoshone Indians and was once part of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Circus. He also opened a restaurant in America with Jack Sharkey, the American heavy weight boxing champion. The Mauretania was built for the British Cunard Line and was launched in September 1906. At the time, she was the largest and fastest ship in the world.
