Jason Camilleri started out in the early 1990s as songwriter, producer and vocalist with the hip-hop group Best Shot. The band signed to the major East West label after winning the BBC's Dance Energy Lift Off competition.
The band released two singles and supported East 17 in the UK and Germany.
"It wasn't exactly our scene, but we certainly had fun," Jason says.
The band split, but Camilleri continued to work in hip-hop. He ran workshops in writing and producing music, and was one of the first rappers to be involved in the Prince's Trust Rock School project.
Born and brought up in Cardiff, another aspect of Jason's varied CV involves his acting work. He was also involved in the casting of the hit film Human Traffic, by Cardiff filmmaker Justin Kerrigan.
"I grew up with Justin and worked with him on Human Traffic getting some of the authentic people from the Cardiff scene involved in the film," says Jason.
He also works as a music writing and production tutor, running workshops on hip-hop music all over Wales.
"When I started in the business there was no one to pass on these skills to me. I was totally self-taught in rapping, producing and writing. I ended up being signed to a major label, so I thought it would be great to be able to pass these skills on to others.
"It's great to see these people go from having nothing, then working on the project for a few weeks, to ending up with a product they can be really proud of."
Jason presented Mixing It on BBC Radio Wales from 2002 until 2009
