mousemat: Programme 33

Sunday 20th May at 5.03pm
(repeated Wednesday 23rd May at 9.30pm)

Time to Eject the Cassette

So it's goodbye to the audio cassette. The electrical retailer Currys has announced that it's going to stop selling blank cassettes and it'll also be phasing out tape decks. This will be sad news for the generation which hunched over cassette players recording the Top Forty and which spent its spare time lovingly compiling mix tapes. But how can cassettes possibly compete with digital mp3 players which have a thousand times the capacity? In this week's programme Adam is joined by the Daily Telegraph's rock critic Neil McCormick and technology journalist Jonny Evans to observe a minute's silence - or should that be a minute's hiss - for the passing of the cassette and to discuss what effect new digital formats are having on our relationship with music.

Bundling

That's the latest buzzword in the world of phone, internet and digital TV services. It's the deal where a single supplier offers you a combined broadband and phone package - and some suppliers throw in TV as well. More and more companies are getting in on the act with bundled offers. But are they worth it? Will they save you money and will you get good service? Adam speaks to Paul Allen from ComputerActive Magazine about a report in this week's edition which suggests that it's worth thinking very carefully before you sign up.

Virtual Exhibition

In a further blurring of the boundaries between the virtual world and real life, design students from Goldsmith's College in London are launching their end of year degree show in both the real world and in the internet world of Second Life. The exhibition, entitled 'Annotations', will take place at the beginning of June at the Truman Brewery in Brick Lane but the doors have already opened on the Second Life version of the exhibition. The students are also planning an open evening where avatars of the students will discuss their work with anybody who wants to drop into the virtual show. Course tutor Matt Ward and student Andrew Murch (whose avatar is a 3 metre high raccoon!) join Adam to consider the increasing importance of virtual worlds in selling yourself and your work.

The Perfect Password

Whenever you log on to your computer, access your e-mail or the internet or shop online you need a password. The problem is, of course, if you choose one that's easy to remember it's likely to be equally easy for someone else to crack. But if you go for something a hacker will never work out you'll immediately forget it. So, what's the key to getting it right? Rhodri Marsden of the Independent newspaper's Cyberclinic ponders passwords in this week's programme and suggests a few tips for devising an uncrackable - but memorable - password.
