Why can't I hear Cardiff City games on Digital TV and Radio anymore?
Over the summer we have made changes to the version of BBC Radio Wales you hear on Digital TV and Radio. Up until now if you listened to the station on Digital TV or DAB anywhere in Wales you would have automatically heard a south east Wales 'version' of the station (and therefore on matchdays, Cardiff City). As a national station it was important that we rectified this. Therefore, we now broadcast a 'national' version on the station on Digital TV and Radio, which matches our service on AM (Medium Wave).
Our football service is predominantly meant to be a localised service for FM listeners. Taking into account the number of teams we cover - and what rights we have - we will take a decision on a game by game basis which, if any, games are broadcast on AM, Digital TV and Radio.
Why do you broadcast all Wrexham games in the North on FM but not all Newport County games in south east Wales?
In the 2010-11 season, BBC Radio Wales commentated live on over 15 Newport County games home and away across the season. We will continue to commentate on Newport games this season too. However, due to the way our transmitters are wired in south east Wales, we are unable to offer Cardiff City and Newport County commentary at the same time. Therefore, as Cardiff City play at the higher level of the English football pyramid, we've generally covered Newport live when Cardiff aren't playing. Whereas in north Wales, Wrexham are the only team playing at their level, meaning we are able to broadcast all of their games on our north FM frequencies.
Where can I hear Swansea City this season?
In a deal with the Premier League and Swansea City, BBC Radio Wales has rights to broadcast every one of the team's Premier League games on FM in the Swansea area (read station editor Steve Austins' blog for more details).
The Swansea area is covered by the Carmel, Kilvey Hill and Varteg Hill transmitters. Unfortunately, we've had to restrict our coverage beyond this, so listeners in Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and southern Gwynedd will now receive our choice of the day's games that we have rights to broadcast across Wales.
We're able to broadcast Swansea City games - like the season opener against Manchester City - across Wales when the BBC national rights holder, BBC Radio 5 Live, is also covering that match live across the UK.
Finally, Carling Cup and FA Cup games are covered by separate deals so we will take a decision on where we broadcast those matches, in addition to the Swansea area, on a case by case basis.
Listening to Radio Wales sports commentary online
Why can't I hear the football / rugby commentary online?
In negotiations for sports commentary rights, each outlet or platform - TV, radio, online - is treated and sold separately. The BBC negotiates with rights-holders on this basis, with priority given to getting maximum value for money for licence fee payers and managing costs responsibly.
BBC Radio Wales does not have online commentary rights for Premier League (Swansea City) and Championship (Cardiff City) football commentary but this can also apply to other sports coverage. On occasions where we can broadcast commentary online, this service can be found on the BBC Sport Wales website, at: bbc.co.uk/walessport
What do I hear on the Listen Live webstream when sport commentary is on-air?
When sport is featured on certain Radio Wales FM frequencies but non-sport programming features on others, it is this other programming you will hear on the live webstream (the webstream is what you hear via the Radio Wales website and iPlayer / Radio Player, or if you access the Radio Wales webstream online on a smartphone using 3G or wi-fi (eg a mobile radio 'app').
If sports commentaries are featured on all frequencies, listeners to the webstream will hear a "blanking" message explaining the situation. During this time, listeners can tune in to the station via FM, AM, or digital to continue listening, or continue following most sports fixtures online via text updates on the BBC Sport website.
Should commentaries be available online, but restricted to listeners in the UK, we are able to offer these commentaries on the BBC Sport Wales website, at: bbc.co.uk/walessport
Listeners in Wales will always be able to hear live sport on Radio Wales across FM, AM (Medium Wave), on digital radio and TV; you'll find full details here on the BBC Radio Wales website.
