Soap says goodbye to a stalwart
2012 will see the end of an era in the history of Cwmderi as Gwyn Elfyn bids farewell to the likeable character that is Denzil in Pobol y Cwm, a BBC Cymru Wales production for S4C.
Denzil has been a big part of Gwyn Elfyn's life for nearly 28 years and has witnessed many an historic event during his time in Cwmderi. Famous for his muck spreader, Denzil has been married twice - to Eileen and her sister, Maureen. A loving father to Sioned and the late John, the character has seen some dark days whilst continuing to be a cornerstone of the community.
A few emotional days were had recently as the cast and crew said goodbye to Gwyn. The exact storyline of Denzil's departure is being kept secret for the time being, but his last scenes promise to be solemn. Following Sioned's recent treatment of Anti Marian, Denzil has cut his daughter out of his will and washed his hands of her completely. And with Nansi's return and their reunion, there are enough possibilities to keep the audience on tenterhooks.
Series producer, Ynyr Williams, appreciates Gwyn's contribution to Pobol y Cwm,
"Every series needs big storylines and Denzil's exit will be one of the biggest in the history of the programme. After 28 commendable years on the show, it's a sad time and the end of an era, but it's also a new start," he says.
During January, an illness spreads throughout Cwmderi and no one is sure of the cause - are the turkeys from Penrhewl or Andy's cheap meat to blame? The residents are too scared to leave their homes and the situation is desperate.
Sunday-Friday, December 25-30.
With the turkeys in the oven, it's an emergency in Cwmderi on Christmas day as the power goes out through the village before lunch. Thank goodness for the Deri's gas oven, as Ed and the family prepare to welcome everyone to celebrate together at the local pub.
Denzil's suspicions are confirmed when he realises how ill Marian has become and insists that his aunt move in with him immediately. When he sees how quickly she recovers, away from his scheming daughter, he's completely convinced of Sioned's wrongdoing. With his heart breaking from disappointment, Denzil is firm with his daughter and their future relationship looks bleak.
Dani realises that there isn't much point in bearing a grudge in life and as a result, she regrets selling her shares in ABD business. Dai pleads with her to buy the shares back but it's too late. Unfortunately for Dani and the business, there's no going back and the new partner isn't exactly welcomed with open arms!
