Cardiff Bay sign

We're moving!

Updated: 25 January 2007

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales is on a roll at the moment - it now has a brand new home in Cardiff Bay to look forward to.

Things are particularly good for the Orchestra at the moment, in their first season with new Principal Conductor Thierry Fischer. Currently they are with him on a sell-out tour of the United States.

The Wales Millennium Centre is a cultural powerhouse, not only as a performance venue but as a base for some of the country's finest arts organisations, including Welsh National Opera, Diversions, Hijinx Theatre and the Urdd.

The Orchestra's move is part of a second phase of building work soon to be carried out at Wales Millennium Centre. It will comprise a recording space able to accommodate the 88-strong Orchestra and 100-strong Chorus as well as a small audience.

Its main public performing home will continue to be St David's Hall, but the Cardiff Bay base will add a new dimension to the scope of the Orchestra's education and community work.

David Murray, the Orchestra's Director, says: "It will be an opportunity to expand the orchestra's repertoire with more specialised concerts, giving people more access to the work of contemporary composers and some of the less well-known parts of the classical repertoire."

"It will also give us the opportunity to revisit some of the work we have commissioned over the years, particularly from Welsh composers."

The management team's offices will be at the venue, along with rehearsal facilities.

The move is expected to take place before the end of 2008.
