Robert Samuel, Grant Llewellyn and Laura Schwelm - 3 generations of NYOW

Youth and experience

Updated: 26 March 2007

Wales' two national orchestras join forces for the 7th time.

Following successful collaborations over the last seven years, Wales' two national orchestras, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, again join forces for a special concert at St David's Hall on Friday 30 March at 7.30pm.

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales' Associate Guest Conductor, Grant Llewellyn, previously a cellist with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, takes up the baton for the evening for a concert of well known classics.

The programme for the evening includes Shostakovich's Festival Overture, Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, performed by BBC National Orchestra of Wales' Robert Plane, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherezade.

The National Youth Orchestra of Wales numbers around 115 young players aged between 13 - 21 years who are auditioned and drawn from all over Wales, and who represent some of Wales' most talented young musicians.

The NYOW has the distinction of being the first national youth orchestra in the world, combining traditional expectations with a contemporary outlook, developing a first-class training experience into performances that are full of energy and passion and performing a repertoire that is bold and adventurous. The Orchestra is a flagship of youth music in Wales.

This concert sees 56 players from National Youth Orchestra of Wales perform alongside the professional players in the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, some of which started their careers as NYOW players.

Pictured with Grant Llewellyn are Laura Schwelm, currently playing flute in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, and Robert Samuel, trumpet, currently in the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and formerly in NYOW.

Matthew Jones also has a view from both angles. Matthew recently started at NYOW as Youth Music Manager, having previously been Assistant Orchestral Manager at the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He feels that the experience for players in both orchestras is valuable and unique.

"It is a great opportunity for the young players to perform alongside professional musicians and is equally rewarding for the senior players to perform with such promising young players and offer them guidance at the beginning of their musical careers. It is a very special collaboration and a very exciting event for the audience."
