Towns & villages 2

Criccieth Town and village websites are a great resource for locals and visitors alike, and a good way for ex-pats to be reminded of home. Let us know if your town or village has a good website we've missed from our list.

Ffestiniog
http://www.ffestiniog.org.uk/eng/home.html
Visitors, business and the community of Blaenau Ffestiniog and surrounding area are catered for here, though some sections like the message board and activities are currently empty. The constantly moving images, like the galloping ram at the bottom of every page, can get on your nerves after a while.

Holyhead
http://www.holyhead.com/
Very much Ann Roberts' homemade site, but there's a wide range of material of interest to locals, ex-pats and visitors. Subjects covered include entertainment, sport, history, businesses, family announcements, a message board and kids' section. There is an accommodation booking service and even some local recipes.

Rhiw
http://www.rhiw.com
An absolute gem of a website with an enormous archive of historical photographs, documents and stories about this tiny Llyn Peninsula village, as well as current information. The treasure trove includes everything from local herbal remedies and ghost stories to pictures of old village characters and seafarers. It's what the web is all about.
Suggested by Tony Jones of Rhiw.

Llanfairfechan
http://www.llanfairfechan.org.uk/
The village's tourism and amenities association is responsible for this site which includes an attractive virtual tour of Llanfairfechan, giving details of many points of interest. There is comprehensive information on local organisations and just about everything else villagers and visitors alike could want.

Llyn
http://www.penllyn.com/
This website covers all the main towns and villages of the Llyn Peninsula, listing businesses, services and information for visitors. You'll also find history, news, photographs and maps, but just like any visitor to Penllyn, youre quite likely to get lost meandering down some of the byways of this site.

Llyn
http://www.llyn-wales.co.uk/
There are some beautiful photographs on David Goadby's personal site, as well as his own suggestions on places to eat, visit and stay, and local business directory.

Penrhyndeudraeth
http://www.penrhyndeudraeth.com/default.htm
The first networked village in the UK, Penrhyndeudraeth has a neatly designed official website that nevertheless lacks some fresh content and photographs.

Gwynedd (Criccieth)
http://freespace.virgin.net/r.cadwalader/wales.htm
This site is a great introduction to Gwynedd, and the Criccieth area in particular - especially for those less familiar with Wales. There's tips on where to visit, photos of the area and links to lots of interesting articles on the area's history, traditions, poems and folktales. There isn't a navigation bar so you'll have to use a lot of the 'back' button, but there are plenty of links within the text to other relevant sections of the site.
Suggested by Robert Dafydd Cadwalader

Porthmadog
http://www.porthmadog.co.uk/
Clear design makes this site refreshingly simple to use, whether you want tourist information, shopping, history or community news. It's not over-ambitious and won't give you a headache.

Penmaenmawr
http://www.penmaenmawr.com/
Plenty of useful and interesting information about the town's history, community life, shops, restaurants and accommodation is included in this site, as well as some lovely walks and a bike route, photos and a discussion forum. But it would benefit from someone to check the English.
Suggested by Emma Morgan

Rhosneigr
http://www.rhosneigr.org.uk/
This website will make you want to pack a bag and head straight for Rhosneigr, thanks to its great pictures and clear information about a wide range of exciting things to do in the popular Anglesey resort. There are also the usual directories of amenities and businesses, plus sections on history and nature, all simply presented.

Trefriw
http://www.trefriw.com/
This Conwy Valley village site looks tidy and is easy to find your way around it. Plenty of useful information on facilities and businesses in Trefriw as well links to other local websites.

Welcome to Wales
http://www.croeso.com/
This network of websites for North Wales towns includes Conwy, Harlech and Llandudno, all designed to the same amateur-looking templates. For each town you will find some useful information on accommodation and tourist attractions, as well as a wide selection of photographs.

Llanbedrog
http://www.llanbedrog.info
This website has a great deal of information on the village of Llanbedrog, Pen Llyn. You can find out about on the weather, tides and local businesses. You can also click on the 'search for' button, and find loads more on accommodation, the latest news and different articles on the history of the area. If you ever get lost, just click on the site map to find your bearings.
Suggested by Alan Harper-Smith

Welcome to Moelfre
http://www.moelfre.info/
This site is an ode to all things Moelfre, from the scarecrow festival to coming second in 'Wales in Bloom'. Some of the stories are a little old, but there are plenty of them and they're very community-spirited. There are handy links for tourists to local businesses, a map of the area and a nature guide to the seaside village.
Suggested by Jim Killock from Bangor

Llanfairpwll
http://www.llanfairpwll.org
This site is mainly to give information on the village's businesses, societies and education. Unfortunately, there are many broken links on the site, with various sections under construction - especially when clicking the English option. However, the history section (in the Welsh option) is quite interesting, and shows how the village's name has been developed over the years, from Pwllgunyll to what it is today - the longest place name in Europe.

Llanbedr
http://www.snowdonia-holidays-llanbedr.co.uk
This attractive site is well presented and easy to use. The left hand navigation, which accompanies you on your surfing, directs you to all the different sections of the site. The accommodation, facilities and attractions of the village of Llanbedr are illustrated and described in detail, making this site very useful for visitors. The site also has a growing community section, helpful to the villagers themselves.
Suggested by Roger Payne of Llanbedr

Llanberis
http://www.llanberis.org
This straightforward site will help you get to know where to go and what to do in Llanberis, the town at the foot of Snowdon. Hover your mouse over one of the subject headings along the top of each page and a list will appear. Just select a category and get info on local walks, climbs and cycle paths, accommodation, events and galleries of the surrounding countryside.
Suggested by Julie Williams from Llanberis

Y Ffôr Horticultural Show
http://www.yffor.org.uk/
This bilingual site is really helpful for those who'd like to compete in this year's show. There's a list of all competitions, judges and an on-line entry form. Just hover your mouse over a subject on the left of each page and further choices will pop up - click on one and see where it takes you. Unfortunately, many of the links take you to pages which are under construction - the site creator would like your help in populating these pages with helpful info about Y Ffôr.
Suggested by Bill Hildyard

Antur Mynydd
http://www.anturmynydd.org.uk/
This very community-spirited site reflects the goings on of Mynydd Llandegai. You can keep abreast of all the local news, from sprucing up the village for the summer festival to the great debate on what the village should actually be called. So whether you're a resident or a local abroad, keep an eye on this site for future village events and societies.
Suggested by Tim Radford from Mynydd Llandegai
