Caernarfon came back down to earth in this match, with inconsitent finishing as much to blame as some shocking defending. The home side were confident of winning this match and things looked promising as they fashioned the first chance after 4 minutes when Marc Evans volleyed a Cerwyn Roberts cross from the left just over the bar from 10 yards. But it was Aber who pounced on a defensive error to open the scoring after 11 minutes - Tim Brandreth's attempted cross-field pass in defence was cut out by striker Gavin Allen who ran in to place the ball confidently past David Walsh.
Caernarfon's best chances of the half fell to Aaron Thomas who, on the half hour, beat the offside trap only for Aber keeper Dean Williams to advance quickly off his line and block Thomas's attempted chip from 20 yards. Thomas again failed to connect properly with a shot from the edge of the box right on half time after good work between Gwyn Peters and Colin Quirk.
Aberystwyth increased their lead after 55 minutes when Sion Meredith was allowed to run in on goal from the left touchline and played a pass to Allen's feet inside the box. Allen rounded Walsh and scored from an acute angle. It was always going to be a mountain to climb for Caernarfon after that and despite having the lion's share of possession could not create many clearcut chances. The best chances fell to Quirk after 85 minutes who saw a shot blocked by the body of Aneurin Thomas inside the area, and Aaron Thomas turned well on the edge of the box but his shot flew wide of the mark as the referee was about to blow for time.
