Rhyl inflicted Caernarfon's heaviest defeat of the season after another nightmare second-half performance. The first half had been evenly contested and the avalanche of goals in the second half was completely unexpected, as it was in Caernarfon's last match against Caersws.
Rhyl expected to at least gain a point from this game and they started brightly. Ex-Bangor striker Lee Hunt found himself room on the edge of the box to fire powerfully at Willcock after only two minutes, but the Caernarfon keeper pushed the effort over the bar. On a wet and heavy pitch passing was proving difficult for both teams and chances were at a premium. However, Rhyl were gifted their opening goal on 19 minutes - Mick Maloney brought Marc Limbert crashing down in the box and Lee Hunt stepped up to calmly slot the ball past Willcock from the spot. Caernarfon clawed their way back into the match on the half-hour when Dylan Owen fired a low drive past keeper Paul Smith from 25 yards after a good lay-off by Carl Rodgers. Rhyl could have taken the lead before half time when Robbie Wood was given too much room in the box to fire in a shot which was well held by the diving Willcock, and Carl Rodgers came close with a header soon after for the Canaries. Both teams trooped off at half time with the match still in the balance.
Caernarfon's second-half performance was awful as they leaked four goals in the first half-hour. Chris Adamson scored his first of the match after 51 minutes, finishing off a right wing cross with a low shot across Willcock's body to the far post, and six minutes later a cross from the left this time picked out Andy Moran on the right whose shot was well saved initially but Lee Hunt was there to tap in from 3 yards. The next goal, after 64 minutes, was finished by Moran this time, beating Tim Brandreth to the loose ball and slotting the ball home under Willcock from a tight angle. Substitute Mark Powell created Rhyl's fifth goal five minutes later, surging forward and crossing dangerously for Adamson to head in his second of the match from 3 yards. Caernarfon then mounted a rare attack, as Paul Roberts gained ground on the right wing and crossed towards the penalty spot, but Calvin Davies could only direct his header wide of the target. It was the only decent chance they created as Rhyl rounded off the match with two more goals; the first came from a corner after 86 minutes - giant defender Timmy Edwards finishing well with his head from 6 yards. And the final nail in the coffin came seconds from the end as Chris McGinn finished a carbon-copy of the previous goal with defenders standing helplessly.
Caernarfon will need to improve drastically if they are to have any chance of progressing in the Welsh Cup next Saturday against Cwmbran Town.
