Caernarfon proved too strong for a Welshpool side lacking in quality and who seem doomed to fight another relegation battle, and Chris Moores's first hat trick of the season made sure of the points for the Canaries.
Caernarfon started the match on fire and had their first scoring chance after only three minutes when Paul Roberts's long ball from right back found Leigh Williams in midfield and his shot flew over the bar from 20 yards. Carl Rodgers followed that chance up three minutes later when his curling free kick from a position to the left of the penalty area was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Welshpool keeper Scott Brown. Brown was in action a minute later to block an effort from Calvin Davies after he had been put through by Paul Roberts.
The mounting pressure finally told after nine minutes when Leigh Williams' chipped pass to Chris Moores on the edge of the area allowed Moores to turn the defender and find the bottom far corner of the net with a pinpoint finish.
The match settled down from then on with Caernarfon having most of the possession but not producing the all important final ball. Welshpool's best chance of the half came from a Sion Meredith header at the far post which found his head from a corner on the Welshpool right. Caernarfon did wake up towards the end of the half and should have doubled their lead when Lloyd Roberts's cross from the left was flicked across the face of goal by James McIlvogue, only for Calvin Davies to miscue his shot from six yards.
Stubborn Welshpool resistance meant that Caernarfon did not score again until the hour mark. Calvin Davies applied the finish from the edge of the area to a pinpoint pass by Paul Wilson from the left wing to double the Canaries' lead. The match effectively slipped away from Welshpool five minutes later as Chris Moores scored his second goal from a fierce shot which took a slight deflection off Martin Evans to wrong foot the goalkeeper.
Two minutes later, on 67 minutes, Welshpool gave themselves a glimmer of hope as defender Craig Wilkinson fired in a low shot from the edge of area after a good passing move. Moores, however, completed his hat trick with 15 minutes to go, turning the defender at his back and placing a low drive past Brown. Before the end both teams could have added to their totals - James McIlvogue's shot from the edge of the box was well saved at the second attempt by Brown and Welshpool striker Steve Rogers's cross from inside the area found substitute Christian Courtney free in the six yard box but his shot was saved from point blank range by Willcock.
Caernarfon fully deserved the victory and now go on to face a much sterner test at TNS next Saturday with confidence high.
