Caernarfon lost their unbeaten home record in some style against an accomplished Newtown side that never looked like losing this match. The match was effectively over before half time as Newtown's deadly trio of Justin Wickham, Tom Reynolds and Peter Smith exposed Caernarfon's defence time and time again and Newtown were unfortunate to go in at half time with only three goals to their credit.
The rout started after only 13 minutes when Newtown pressure finally told, with defenders standing and watching Newtown's Anthony Fenton delivered a pinpoint cross into the box to Tom Reynolds who planted a free header past the stranded Willcock. Two minutes later, Reynolds was put through on goal again only for his shot to be well saved by Willcock.
However, the keeper could only divert the ball into the path of the onrushing Wickham who gleefully planted a low drive past the defender on the line. There already seemed no way back for the Canaries, however it might have been different had Lloyd Roberts converted an easy chance from 2 yards with 17 minutes gone; Moores provided the low cross from the left but Roberts missed the ball when all that was needed was a firm contact to score.
Caernarfon had further escapes before Newtown scored their third goal; in the 23rd minute a corner from the Newtown right was cleared by Town's Craig Hogg to a Futcher and his ball back in to the box fell to defender Anthony Fenton who had stayed up from the corner and his shot on the turn struck the post. Reynolds had a goal disallowed for offside after 28 minutes but he was not to be denied his second goal of the game after 39 minutes, finishing off Wickham's cross to the far post after he had ghosted past Caernarfon left back Mick Maloney.
Caernarfon did try to play more football in the second half and they brought on Danny McGoona and Calvin Davies to good effect, but the game had already been lost in a dire first half performance. Despite having more possession Caernarfon were unable to create any chances that unduly troubled Newtown keeper Paul Edwards and meekly surrendered their unbeaten run at the Oval.
