Football can be a cruel game at times, and the way in which Caernarfon were dumped out of the Welsh Cup by Cwmbran Town is a prime example. Caernarfon adopted a new 5-3-2 formation for this match with Paul Roberts as sweeper and they looked more solid in defence.
The first half was evenly contested. Dylan Owen had the Canaries' first chance after only two minutes when Steve Watkin played the ball to him on the edge of the box, but his tame shot found the grateful hands of Cwmbran keeper Gareth Wesson. Chris Summers came close after 18 minutes when his run against Paul Roberts brought a shooting chance from 20 yards but his shot was off target. Caernarfon should have gone ahead two minutes later - Paul Roberts's long cross from the right found Mick Maloney in space at the near post but Wesson was equal to Maloney's effort and saved well with his legs at his near post.
Caernarfon keeper Ian Willcock gave the home fans a scare after 33 minutes when his poor clearance fell at the feet of Chris Summers in midfield. However, Willcock managed to recover and catch the attempted chip. Five minutes before the break Cwmbran pinched the lead - a cross from the left hand side was not properly cleared and the ball broke to Michael Fowler who had the easy job of scoring from 3 yards.
Caernarfon came out for the second half determined to get back into the game, and for long spells of the half they had most of the possession and created a number of good situations. Carl Rodgers had a powerful shot deflected wide for a corner after 47 minutes and Calvin Davies appeared to be brought down by Gareth Warton inside the box on 62 minutes but referee Andy Woodthorpe did not point to the spot.
Davies was then booked for dissent as he argued his case. On 70 minutes a Martyn Chalk free kick from the right gave Mark Hobson a headed chance but his effort was well held again by Wesson. As the minutes ticked by the pressure increased on Cwmbran - Wayne Phillips went close with a curling effort from 25 yards after 78 minutes and Carl Rodgers had a similar effort saved after 87 minutes. Caernarfon thought they had forced the game into extra time when an injury time corner found Tim Brandreth lurking at the far post and his well executed shot found the far corner of the net for the equaliser.
However, in the cruellest possible fashion home hearts were broken as Cwmbran attacked from the restart and played the ball to Chris Summers inside the box. He protected the ball and played a short pass inside to Rhodri Jones who had ghosted unmarked into the box, and Jones sealed the victory with an unstoppable effort from six yards.
