Which organisation are you involved with?
PhAB (Physically Disabled and Able Bodied). We meet at the Ty Llewelyn centre, which is a new addition to Canolfan yr Orsedd, Llandudno.
What sort of volunteer work do you do?
The club is a social club, so I just chat with people, mix with them. I'm also treasurer and on the committee, so I also help organise trips to the theatre, ten pin bowling and going out for meals.
How did you get started?
There was a low point in my life and this type of work was something I was interested in. So I started doing some voluntary work, and I got more involved as the years went on. I've really enjoyed it.
How long have you been a volunteer?
For about 18 years now.
Are there any special skills you need to be a volunteer?
It depends on how much work you put in to it. Some members are just involved in the social side, and some are also on the committee because they like to get more involved.
Training is also important these days, especially in knowing about risk assessments and health and safety in the club. PhAB Wales do some training weekends, and they provide the relevant literature. The Conwy Volunteering Services Council also hold courses.
How many hours a week/month do you give?
The club meets for two hours every week, but of course, the post of treasurer does involve a few more hours.
What are the best, and worst things about being a volunteer?
One of the best points is just being there and enjoying it. Sometimes, for instance, when we go away on an activities weekend and I see someone achieve something I'd never thought they could achieve, I get a real buzz.
You've got to remember to work as a team, though. It gets a bit difficult if you allow yourself to do everything. You've got to remember to spread the workload because everyone's got different talents. Some people can fundraise whereas others are better at organising things.
