Becoming a Guider

Erica Jones volunteering at a playscheme in Penrhys, South Wales, in 2003 Erica Jones from Caernarfon, who has always been an active volunteer, gives her tips on leaving the Guides and becoming a leader.

Which organisation do you work for?
The Girl Guides Association.

What sort of voluntary work do you do, and where?
I'm a Guider with the 1st Caernarfon Brownies. I've also helped out with homework clubs and I did other voluntary work with school children whilst at university.

How did you get started?
I used to be a Guide and at age 16 I had the opportunity to train as a Guider myself. I did two years volunteering with the Rainbow Guides, a pack younger than the Brownies. Last year, I decided I wanted to work with a slightly older age group - Brownies are aged seven to ten years.

How long have you been a volunteer?
Since I was 16, so about eight years now.

Are there any special skills you need to be a volunteer?
You need to be able to have fun and to be friendly with children. It's important to put yourself on the same level as them in a way. You have to have a little authority with some because they'll take advantage, but not a lot or you'll upset them.

How many hours a week/month do you give?
An hour and a half a week and occasionally weekends.

What are the best, and worst things about being a volunteer?
One of the best things is meeting new people and having fun. There aren't any drawbacks really - I'm glad I began to do it and I don't want to finish as I enjoy it so much. I'm glad I found out about Guiding.

How can other people get involved?
You could either approach the Girl Guides Association, or Mantell Gwynedd. They have helpful contacts for lots of voluntary organisations, including local Rainbows, Brownies and Guides.

Liz Foskett, Anglesey
Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section on Anglesey also have fun and enjoy a wide range of activities. We too need volunteers to help, plus in some areas there are spaces for girls to join. Please contact me at via the Girlguiding website girlguiding.org.uk or tel 0800-1695901.

Sarah Brown Owls Daughter
I am a local Ranger. My mum runs 1st Caernarfon Brownies and is always looking for help. I would be happy to give information to anybody that is interested in joining the organisation and can help find a Brownie pack that is close to home. We are always on the look out for new volunteers and mum is a Welsh learner so there is no need to worry about being English.

While growing up in Caernarfon I belonged to the Brownie Troupe and have fond memories of our meetings at Feed My Lambs school.
