Charity shop

Diane Salisbury

Last updated: 27 November 2005

We can all think of a local charity shop, but what's it like to work in one? Diane Salisbury from Llandudno gives us the benefit of her experience.

Which organisation do you work for?
Scope.

What sort of voluntary work do you do, and where?
I work in the Scope shop on Madoc Street, Llandudno. I ensure it's nice and tidy and I sell raffle tickets sometimes. I also just generally chat to customers and make sure all the clothes we receive are presentable.

How did you get started?
I've always done voluntary work, but 12 years ago I decided to go for a change of direction. Scope was opening a shop at the time and I asked if they'd consider taking on somebody in a wheelchair as a volunteer. Everything's been fine. I can't reach the till, but apart from that, I don't have any real trouble.

How long have you been a volunteer?
Twelve years with Scope, but I did some work before that.

Are there any special skills you need to be a volunteer?
You need the patience of a saint, and you've got to be polite and remember that the customer is always right!

How many hours a week/month do you give?
I do three days a week, 12:00 until 4:30. When I first started I worked full time but I found it too much for me.

What are the best, and worst things about being a volunteer?
It's very rewarding. I suppose the worst is like any other job - you have good days and bad days.

How can others get involved?
I just turned up and offered myself as a volunteer. So anyone can just come in and enquire. You can also go to the volunteer bureau on Madoc Street, Llandudno. Some people sent over by them have ended up in full time employment with Scope.
