Return to the theatre

Carrie Owen Carrie Owen from Groeslon tells us about returning to the world of the theatre as a volunteer.

What sort of voluntary work do you do, and where?
I'm a volunteer usher at Theatr Colwyn.

How did you get started?
I saw an ad about four years ago but I couldn't do anything at the time because I was looking after my elderly mother in London. But then they contacted me again two years later to see if I was still interested and so I joined.

I was a bit nervous to begin with. My husband I was a dancer when I was young but when I packed that in, I became a music agent for ten years. Then I moved up to North Wales, so it's nice to be back in the world of theatre.

Glyn was an actor and I'd been to that theatre many times with him, so I didn't know how I'd feel going back there alone after he died. But I spoke to my friends and they said I must give it a go. So I did go along and it was a delight.

How long have you been a volunteer?
For about two years now.

How many hours a week/month do you give?
You can do as little or as much as you want. I've been an usher five times so far and I've really enjoyed it.

What are the best, and worst things about being a volunteer?
It's a great way of meeting like-minded people who are interested in the theatre.

There's a great spirit at the theatre. We had a lovely Christmas dinner which everyone went to, and there was great entertainment. There are also coffee mornings each month for the volunteers to keep up to date with what's going on. Leslie, our coordinator, is fantastic. She works so hard for them.

How can others get involved?
Contact the theatre on 01492 532668.

Well, three years on, dozens of films, live shows for adults and children and of course, panto, it's me again with an update on the situation at Theatr Colwyn. They are working so hard to provide a local theatre for local people, and the theatre is used by schools, opera companies, drama groups as well as professional companies, tribute acts, light entertainment etc. The films are all latest releases, apart from Sunday night classic film club. Friends of the Theatre raise funds lnmany ways, but what would really help is a grant from the Welsh Assembly regeneration fund for Colwyn Bay, so if anoyone has any influence with Cardiff would they please point out what a worthy cause this wonderful little theatre is?

I too am a volunteer. I agree with everything said by Carrie. The atmosphere is very friendly. We get a couple of grumbles but usually on the way into Theatre. All comes out right when the people go out. I just love the Pantomine season. I love to see the childrens faces. Magic
