Working for the future

Abbey Roberts

Last updated: 05 December 2006

Being at university doesn't stop Abbey Roberts from Llandudno from giving her all to her community - both people and nature.

What sort of voluntary work do you do, and where?
Youth work at the Ty Llywelyn at Friday night youth club and environmental work with the Woodlands Project also based at Ty Llewellyn.

How did you get started?
My boyfriend's mum asked me to volunteer.

How long have you been a volunteer?
For over three years.

Are there any special skills you need to be a volunteer?
Enthusiasm! The youth club is for 8-11 year olds and I run a garden and nature club along with another volunteer. In the summer, we teach the children about gardening and how to look after plants, as well as nature studies and introducing them to the local wildlife.

I also teach the children some art and we recently made a large collage of a country cottage that the children really enjoyed.

I also work on the Woodlands Project. It's a scheme that aims to bring back the woodlands which once covered Cwm Mountain in Llandudno. At the moment there are native species of trees being planted, there are plans for a green gym, which will be an educational activity area built out of wood, a sculpture trail, an education centre for local schools to use and a sensory garden which is the part of the project that I am involved with.

How many hours a week/month do you give?
At least 2/3 hours a week whilst I am at uni, more during the summer holidays.

What are the best, and worst things about being a volunteer?
The best thing is interacting with the children and making a difference to my community. I also love knowing that the work I do for the Woodlands project is going to benefit people for generations, not just in my lifetime.

How can others get involved?
