Ferries

Stenaline ferry to Dublin

Sea links have always been vital to the North West and road improvements have now enabled travellers bound for Ireland to reach Holyhead in record time.

Stena Line and the European Development Fund have invested heavily in the redevelopment of the Port of Holyhead. New berths have been constructed in both Holyhead and Dublin, which have increased the loading capacity and cut turn-around time for freight and passengers.

This is in conjunction with the arrival of the Stena Adventurer superferry, with its on-board cinema, first class lounge and en suite cabins.

If Stena are cutting down to only one ferry a day to Ireland, what's happening to the day return?

We have a motorhome and would take it to Ireland but for the crazy, high prices for ferry crossings. We can fly for around £100 or less, but the ferry cost last time I looked was £257 (cheapest) and then we have the fuel to get to and from the ferry port in the UK - another £60+ more than the cost of going to our local airport (as well as that long, tiring drive and crossing). Wake up Irish Tourist Board and ferry companies - these prices cripple the tourism market. Looks like Scotland, Wales and England will be getting the benefit of our petrol purchases, campsite fees, entertainment, food and gift purchase spending next year. France got it this year and maybe Spain 2010 unless Irish ferry prices come down.

i have always used irish ferries since we moved to ireland about nine years ago, but recently when we went home the ferry was that full we had to sit on the stairs for the full journey to holyhead, there was only one cafe open, nobody asked if we were ok or not. the crew were all eu, did not understand hardly any english and nowadays everybody can speak or at least understand english. we certainly won't be going on the irish ferries again - it will be hello stena.

David M from Newcastle upon Tyne - First time ever on a ferry, it was great on the faster ship, only 100 mins to dun laogaire, I took a day trip from Wales which cost me £25 and had 6 hours in Dublin. I intend to go on holiday next year to travel around Ireland with my tent using Stena from Stranrae to Belfast and then travelling around. Altogether a great experience. I hope that the weather is good for you. The best holiday that I've ever had was doing the same thing. Don't rush it.
