Beeping your horn for Fairies? (rolls eyes, shakes head). This may come as shock but fairies are imaginary creatures designed to amuse three year old girls.

I have been coming to Pennmaenmawr all my life as my parents have a caravan there. I was told by my dad the reason for tooting your horn when you go through the tunnel was that when it was built it was opened early and workers were still inside, so when you went through you tooted to warn the workers you were coming! The fairy story is better though. I toot my horn every time.

To those who say, 'It's against the law' Bah humbug to you. To those that get distracted, re take your test to cope with today's driving conditions as if you do get distracted and drive into the back of the vehicle in front, you were obviously driving too close and therefore were driving without due care and attention and recklessly. One thing to remember though people, is that you can only 'warn the fairies and say goodbye to them' on the WAY OUT of Wales heading eastbound through the old tunnel as they don't live in the new one!

The sign was telling you not to beep - due to the residents nearby before the A55 was built. Hence why people started beeping... These days its only the tourists that still occasionally do it.

We always called it the "Hootie Tunnel" and I still sound my horn going through it now. One of my earliest memories is from the late 1960s when I was about 3 years old. We where stuck in a traffic jam going through the tunnel and the noise of everybody hooting their horns was brilliant!

It's a bit of fun everyone. If someone in a different vehicle tooting causes you to lose concentration then there is a larger issue here! It is a tunnel, it's not like you're 'sounding the horn in a residential area' unless its for the fairies! Long live the tooting!

Well said, Heddwyn! People shouldn't beep when they go through the tunnel. It is distracting.

I used to have family in Llanfairfechan in the 1990s and everytime we visited them we travelled through the 'fairy tunnel' and my dad beeped the horn so we didn't injure them. I now do this tradition when I go through this tunnel as I loved the area so much when I was young. I go on holiday in the area every year and now my own kids remind me to do it as we approach. Hope this tradition lives on as the fairies were there long before us.

Not many people seem to realise that sounding the horn anywhere is against the law, unless it is used as an imminent warning of the vehicle's presence. It is classed as unnecessary use of the warning instrument. Using it for fun in any tunnel could cause distress to other drivers or even an accident as I know has happened in the past in this tunnel when a driver braked suddenly on hearing the horns and a vehicle travelling too close behind ran into the back of his vehicle.

Since travelling through the tunnel in the 1960s I remember that the rule was to "beep for the fairies".

The beep beep tunnel is legendary, it's got more history than Manchester United. For 45 years I've beeped my horn every weekend on my way to our second home on the island. Before the tunnel was built you had to go round the rockface, a very very thin single track, still visible today. When entering the tunnel heading towards Conwy there is a small gate on your left hand side at the entrance to the tunnel. That track took you around the outside of the cliff face.

I go through the "beeping tunnel" nearly every morning five or six days a week and on very rare occasion hear people beeping. We try and get our mum and dad to because it's fun looking at the people in the other cars wondering what's going on.

I've lived in Bangor all my life and have passed through "The Beeping Tunnel" many a time but i have to say this is the first time I've heard it being referred to as that in my life. Every time I pass through the tunnel I beep my horn but not many people do it. Bring back The Beeping Tunnel!

We spent several wonderful holidays in a caravan at Dwygyfylchi about sixty years ago. There was just a field with a water tap at the gate and caravans all around the field. We kids had a great time in the grassy centre area playing ball games. The cows used to amble past our caravan every morning led by the bull whom we called 'Bully-Beef'. My Dad was convinced he would find mushrooms for our breakfast, but he never did. In those days, each caravan brought its own toilet tent and you had to dig a hole to empty the bucket into before going home!

Sixty years on I still love camping and spend most weekends in our caravan.

We are both pensioners now and have been using the"beeping tunnel" since we were both young children- going to and from Anglesey. Our children and grandchildren keep up the tradition to this day. Our rule is that you only sound the horn on the way home as a signal of a great holiday and saying goodbye to wales. In fact we came through the tunnel today and sounded the horn- long may this continue!

The Beeping Tunnel! Remember it from the 80s. Everytime we would drive through it we would hit the horn! I'm sure there were signs prompting you to do it!
