Tywyn

Tywyn Beach - Mike Greenwood Tywyn beach is relatively safe for surfing as it is a long straight beach with no rocks or tidal rip. There are groins along part of the beach and it can be a popular spot for people launching jet-skis in the summer.

The best surf is to be had just to the North of the concrete slipway at the South end of the promenade. This has the advantage of being directly opposite the toilets and chip shop.

The surf is best around one to two hours either side of high tide, depending on the height of the tide. At high tide the waves become very dumpy, at which point it is prudent to move to the area known as 'The Pipe', which is to the South of a pile of rocks covering the pipe about 300 metres south of the slipway.

There is a very strong North/South component to the tide which can make you drift off the best surf and can make the paddle to or from the pipe hard going. It's a popular spot with canoeists as well as boardies.

Tywyn is a great place for beginners and generally quite safe. Attention should be given to the tidal drift and the groynes. There are areas to the south where there are no groynes, but the nearer to Aberdyfi you get the stronger the rips can be. I have had some memorable sessions in and around the area over the last 20 years. The locals are friendly as long as the waves are shared. Enjoy!A new surf school called Aberadventures has started with a BSA level 3 coach based in Borth.

Long board territory, lovely long rights, great for us oldies. Best in big swells after stormy weather. Its position means that it is clean when other breaks are blown out. Accesible yet uncrowded, you will often be alone between your groins. Tywyn has convenient camp site and a great Indian restaurant/takeaway.

This is my home break and I've surfed hours here. I've a picture I took of a monster 8ft+ swell, perfect conditions. I stood gobsmacked on the beach outside my parents house wondering if I could surf it! We did and what a day it was! I'm back into surfing again coz I've missed it, I have a feeling this is going to be a good winter, so see you out back!
