Porth Oer

Porth Oer This beach is also known as Whistling Sands because of the noise sometimes made when you walk on it.

A well known and popular spot for body boarding, this North West facing beach sometimes has excellent waves when conditions are just right and the swells wrap in around the point.

Watch out for the rips dragging you across the beach towards the rocks, particularly on the dropping tide. In Summer it can get particularly crowded and is often favoured by learners.

Canoed in Porth Oer. We found small group of surfers out in 10 ft swell. Brilliant time, can't find wave report for daily viewing though. Hells Mouth is the nearest report and has webcam. But Porth Oer is the gem. Please erect a webcam.

Born and bred 15 mins away from Porth Oer, been surfing for nearly 25 years...18 ft? Once I've got up from the floor laughing. You'll be telling me beware of sharks next. Even 10 to 12ft is a ridiculous statement to make. It simply does not happen here. There are a few more breaks fortunately not listed on here or anywhere else. Let's keep it that way. I do wonder if people make this up as they go along to look cool...Hwyl Fawr!

I grew up surfing on Whilsting Sands. Fantastic beach for surfing, just don't be afraid of rocks and weather.

Papa W. Sounds bonkers I agree but check out Magicseaweed photos from August 2006. 18' - maybe not, but solid 10-12. Wasn't there but wish I was (a bit).

yeah it's a great wave on, it's the best an hour or 2 b 4 high tide, then an hour or so after depending on the swell, some other great sheltered north shore spots around tho, so have a drive around in a big south westerly and you may well find some hidden jems 4 sure !!

surfed at hells mouth usually as spent most of my life in abersoch. since i moved to uni at bangor i've taken up surfing a lot more. however we went on a trip to the mouth on tuesday. to our dismay we found it small windy and dirty. so we moved around the headland to porth oer as we had heard it was good in some conditions. even though the tide wasnt in it was massive and i had an amazing time. one set of about 6 waves must have been nearly 18feet. whih was needless to say crazy scary and most of all incredible! never underestimate the waves!

We've just come back home after a five and a half week stay in Abersoch. Had an awesome experience just past St Tuds islands. I've never seen a dolphin there yet and moan every time that people have seen them, well I think they had come from far and wide it was like dolphin soup out - mums, dads and babies rising through the water in unison and dolphins leaping out of the water from every angle it was totally amazing.
