This narrow bay picks up plenty of swell from the South West, but due to its size is generally best before or after high tide.
Watch out for canoeists here as it's a favourite haunt of theirs.

Fantastic beach and surf, however watch out for Weaver Fish. My partner was stung in the next cove along, I think called Broad Beach, in the little cove to the left looking out to sea. I would recommend wearing surf/beach shoes, you can buy them from the van, North Wales Wetsuits, in the car park. It's thanks to this guy that we knew what had happend and he gave up his coffee to treat the sting until we could get hot water.

Been surfing Anglessey for over a year now and I can't see the fuss. Short rides with half of the NW UK dropping in on you. There are better waves on the island, even for a shortboarder like me. Can be the only option sometimes and, to be fair, it once held a semi-rideable wave during a 30kt onshore wind!

The surf at Cable Bay is world class. Everyone go there, you won't regret it.

I surf but cannot understand why there's so many problems with surfers, bodyboarders & kayakers. We all love the sea but struggle to play together. Other countries don't have this problem, they just get on with it. I would say a bit more courtesy to each other wouldn't go amiss. By the way locals, you don't own the sea, you're just lucky to live there. I know it gets busy out there, but we're all there to have fun.

Went to Cable at the weekend with the dogs - beautiful, never seen such huge waves, made me wish I surfed... Absolutely fantastic and almost completely deserted.

What's all this surfer/kayaker flak about? There are good and bad folks doing both, and we all just want to get out there and enjoy the water... There are more important things to get upset about in the world surely.

Yeah it is good for skimboarding, bodyboarding and surfing. plenty of kayakers, but they're no real harm, just clumsy sometimes. best though for flatland skimboarding in my opinion, and I shall be hitting cable often and hard for the foreseeable future. as for learners - buy dvds, watch them, copy.

Did some great body boarding here, Rhosneigr was full of kite surfers so this beach was perfect. Waves weren't huge but still had some fun! Very easy to access to which is always a bonus.

Almost always crowded so thankfully as a local I can use mid week to occasionally surf this break but I am always disappointed by the very short rides and often overbearing kayakers who really do have a lot more options for locations than surfers.

I grew up on the sands that stretch from Newborough to Rhosneigr during the 50s and 60s, Cable Bay was a nice quiet place in those days. Barcloddiad y Gawres is a prehistoric burial chamber which overlooks the bay so it must have been popular for thousands of years, do you think Neanderthal Man surfed on a piece of wood? Apparently his direct decendants still do it!The telegraph cable from Anglesey to Ireland went from there once upon a time, hence the name.

This Place is AWESOME! The BEST skimboarding in north wales by far it has everything- the right sand, shallow incline, occasional wvae breaking on the shore. Best time seems to be a couple of hours before low tide. Look out for the videos on youtube. also rhosneigr is good.

Why is it called Cable Bay?

Cable is a fantastic place for families in the summer, ice creams, safe bay, snorkelling etc. Recent winter years has seen Cable get very crowded for all surf users and getting a bit dangerous with mix of beginners and some others not as in control. Beginners might find it less crowded and therefore more fun along the neighbouring beaches from Rhosniegr to Porth Nobla. Then you only have to worry about your own board hitting you rather than other people's too!

Hello, just to say i think you are all bein unfair on kayakers, we have just as much right to be at Cable as you do, and as a local on the island maybe it would get less cramped if non local people stayed away!

everybody reads wave size differently... any1 with solid surf experience and a head on their shoulders knows how big it can be ridden and only those that were there to witness it can back you up, so dont surf alone and shout like hell when you do get a good one!
surfing is an adrenalin sport and we all get a bit carried away sometimes with how big it was but hey, if you really did surf it that good and big you dont need to say it was any bigger cos you should have a big smile on your face and you will go to sleep with memory playback. you will have great memories. just enjoy every session you get to surf.
we are truly blessed to have a place called Anglesey... many beaches on our coast will work you just got to be there.
jan 2007 i was fishing on the shore of penryn nr rhos when solid 4ft clean beautiful waves unexpectedly rolled in for about an hour as the tide came in.. first time i had travelled without my 'board and last. the swell was almost nothing in Rhos so Penryn should have been flat... expect the unexpected.

I learnt to surf here when i was at uni at bangor. what a place, the best and the cliff jump is great fun even in the normal tides, just time your jump right so you hit the up wave. i love it there - great memories, i even managed to get really burnt one summer's day!
