Netball

Netball

Last updated: 19 May 2006

You needn't stop playing netball after school, so if you fancy giving it a go again, here's our guide to the game in NW Wales. Remember to get in touch with your club's news, reviews and photos.

Gwen Jones from Llanfairfechan gives us the lowdown on the game she loves.

"Welsh Netball are trying to encourage more opportunities to play the game in the area, so instead of having two local leagues, they have set up the north west Wales league and split that into three divisions. The first division is played in Colwyn Leisure Centre on a Wednesday night, where the top teams with county level players get together.

Division two is played at Ysgol John Bright on a Monday night.

Division 3 was Initially for the weaker teams, but it's turned into the junior league.

Teams can move from one division to the other at the end of the season, which runs from September to the end of March. The leagues have training sessions at Ysgol John Bright for £1. There's coaching in tactics, speed and agility.

I loved playing netball - I put on loads of weight when I stopped playing! I'm still actively involved because I still enjoy going along to watch the junior teams play and helping to organise the game on a county level. I'd miss it if I wasn't involved in some way, but you have to listen to your knees!

But you can play into your forties - there's absolutely no need to stop at school level. Some of the top teams have more mature women who play at a very high standard."

I am 20 and have just been selected to play for the Army.I just started to play again in the last couple of months and realised what I'd been missing. I would never give up. I have just come back from the Army netball championships up in Scotland and had the best time of my life. I am off to Cyprus in March and Barbados in July next year. I still would like to carry on playing in the Conwy area.

I am 21 years old and have not played netball since high school, where I played for school and county level. I am now interested in playing the sport again and was wondering if there were any local teams, as I do go to Coleg Menai in Bangor. Many Thanks

Bethan Moore, Bethesda
I have recently started netball sessions every Monday 6-7pm in Plas Ffrancon Leisure Centre, Bethesda. The session costs £2 and we just play games with players of various ages and different experience. Due to the interest we are hoping to join a local league, does anyone know how this could be possible?

Elaine Owen - Llandudno
I am 21 and have recently set up a new netball club. We call ourselves Pink Panthers, currently we have 2 teams - Adults, panthers 1 is our first team and panthers 2 is our develpoment team. We train every Wednesday 7 - 8:30, at John bright Leisure Centre, Llandudno. This club is for all players, people who have never played before or who want to get back into the sport - this was initially what the training sessions were about, to get women back into the sport and we have now developed a club from it. Both teams play in the NORTH WEST WALES LEAGUE DIV 2, and are hoping to enter into the JB Summer league as well. New players are more than welcome - just come along!
