Disabled sport

Wheelchair athlete Anglesey, Conwy and Gwynedd disability sports officers let us know about activities ranging from boccea to swimming. Remember to send us your club's photos and stories.

Anglesey
Karen Williams is the disability sports development officer for Anglesey council - here's what she's up to:

"We've got football sessions every Thursday from 5pm and 6pm at Llangefni Leisure Centre and recently the Llangefni Ladies adopted a group of footballers, creating the Llangefni Lions football team. This team is open to any age - it began as 15+, but now we're introducing younger people too.

There are sports sessions at Beaumaris Leisure Centre every Thursday, 2pm and 3.30pm, where you can go trampolining or play boccea. You can also play boccea with Canolfan Mona on Tuesdays at Llangefni and with Tyddyn Môn at Amlwch Leisure Centre on Fridays.

We're looking to start up an athletics club for children and adults during the summer, with the support of Mencap and social services. If we can pull that off, it would be great for Anglesey.

We'll be starting the Free Swim project in a few months, giving opportunities for juniors and adults to get swimming.

We're also hoping to get weightlifting for disabled people set up in Holyhead, coached by Raymond Williams. That will be something different to the other counties.

The three counties of North West Wales have got together to hold sport sessions for deaf people - we all get together at Maes Glas Leisure Centre, Bangor, every week. It's just started, but hopefully it will take off.

For more information, people can call me on 01248 752046."

Conwy
Ian Martin, the disability sports development officer for Conwy:
"The Llandudno multi-disabled football club meet every Tuesday at John Bright sports centre, which caters for children of all disabilities, though predominately those with learning difficulties.

The Abergele Allsports Club hold football sessions for under 16s at the Abergele Leisure Centre at 5pm every Wednesday.

We've got physical disability tennis, based at the Tennis Centre, Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay, each Saturday between 12 and 1pm. There's also learning disability tennis at Eirias Park on Thursdays between 5pm and 6pm.

If you like bowling, contact me on 01492 575575 for information about the Llandudno Visually Impaired Ten Pin Bowling Club.

Each Wednesday between 5pm and 7pm there's badminton for people with disabilities at the Three Feathers Badminton Club, Llandrillo College Leisure Centre.

The Welsh Association for Cricketers with Disabilities hold winter net sessions at the centre in Ruabon every fortnight. The better players go on to play for Wales in the county championships and I'd really like to encourage more opportunities for disabled people to play cricket in Conwy, as I know travelling all the way over to Wrexham is quite far. We've got plans to have more facilities for climbing and athletics in the future too.

The Conwy Whales, based at Colwyn Bay swimming pool, have sessions every other Saturday between 6pm and 7pm. We consulted parents about having specific swimming lesons for disabled children, but they told us that they preferred their children to join the classes already available, with the right support.

Boccea clubs in the area are usually organised by day centres, so get in touch with your nearest one for more information about the game."

Gwynedd
Markus Politis is the disability sports development officer for Gwynedd:
"Boccea is a type of bowls, using softer, lighter balls and you can use a ramp to aim the ball if necessary. The three players on each team try and aim as closely as possible to the white ball.

It's possible to play indoors in a leisure centre or outdoors, with the new training balls.

Local clubs include:
Porthmadog Boccea Club - Leisure Centre, 11.30 - 12.30
Moelwyn Boccea Club - Blaenau Ffestiniog
Sally Morris - 01766 830899
Clwb Ni Boccea Club - Pwllheli
Eluned Jones - 01758

At the moment, we're running taster sessions for sports for deaf people at the Maes Glas Leisure Centre, Bangor, on Thursday between 6pm and 7pm. There's football for young people with disabilities at Caernarfon Football Club each Friday between 5pm and 6pm.

Gwynedd Council have also got an initiative to offer free swimming sessions to people with disabilities at Porthmadog, Pwllheli, Bangor, Arfon, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Tywyn swimming pools.

There's the opportunity to give athletics a go at the Menai Track Club. Just contact christinerogers@tesco.net or helenwalling@securetrading.com to have a chat about their facilities.

There's also a general sports club in Dolgellau (01341 423579) which has boccea, badminton, curling and athletics sessions between 1.30 and 2.30 each Thursday.

If you need any more information, call me on 01758 704109."

I am currently seeking suitable activities to recommend to an elderly contact living in a community in Pwllheli. She has asked about EXTEND exercise for the over sixties which I promote and train teachers for, but my nearest qualified active teacher is 24 miles away in Ffestiniog. Boccea sounds good, swimming possibly too, are there any other clasess or organisations who would welcome this lady and her neighbours?

Tracy Austin, Anglesey
I have been playing for Llangefni Lions for the last four years. I look forward to Mondays when the training is on so I can see my friends in the Lions and the people who do football like John or Karen. Football helps me to get good mobility skills.
