Pwllheli

Clothes on a market stall

Last updated: 17 January 2006

Stacey and Gwenno from Ysgol Glan-y-Môr introduce the world to Pwllheli - so all you tourists, take note!

Stacey says: "Pwllheli is a small historic town on the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula only a few miles from our very own surf city of Abersoch!

Pwllheli has a variety of different restaurants which include Chinese cuisine, Italian, Indian and the traditional fish and chips. Pompeii (the Italian) is my favourite restaurant in Pwllheli and I highly recommend it.

The pubs I recommend are Penlan Fawr, The Whitehall and the Tower Hotel. They all have big screen TVs that often show the football. It has just been renovated and now has banned smoking due to the health risks.

Here in Pwllheli there are loads of things to do so that you can have a fun-filled day on your visit. Right in the middle of the town there is a cinema which is also a local theatre. It's been a host to many performances such as Diversions (dance company). Also there is a leisure centre just by the beach which has a swimming pool, tennis courts, a sports hall, a sauna and a sun shower.

On the Maes there is a small amusement fair which has an arcade, a bouncy castle, bumping cars and a ghost train.

So Pwllheli has a lot of things to do for those who come on holiday."

Gwenno agrees that there's loads to do in her home town:

"We have a weekly market on Wednesdays. A charter given by Edward III first established a market in Pwllheli. Since then, there are weekly markets here and in Caernarfon and Porthmadog. The market has a wide selection of fruit and veg, plants and gifts, clothes and garden furniture.

Another great thing about Pwllheli is the Welshness of the town. Every shop is owned by locals and the staff are always friendly.

Pwllheli once had its own poet called Cynan. His full name was Albert Evans Jones and he was born on April 14 1895. He lived on Penlan High Street where Office Supplies is today.

Pwllheli is also within easy access to the Snowdonia National Park, Criccieth, Nefyn and Abersoch. You must visit Pwllheli to see how wonderful it really is.

The only thing that we kids want now are more activities after school. Otherwise it is a perfect town to visit for long holidays or short breaks."
