The artist chosen to depict the twice-winner of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution gold medal for bravery was Sam Holland, a sculptor who lives on the River Medway, but who has strong connections with Moelfre and its sea-faring community.
"My grandfather was great friends with Dic Evans and I met him a few times as a child on holiday in Moelfre. So when I went for the interview for the work of creating his sculpture I could show that I knew a great deal about him and what kind of man he was. I was really, really delighted to be given the opportunity to create the sculpture of Dick Evans.
The sculpture should be ready towards the end of this year. I've finished the main body of the work and I'm now overseeing the casting process. The whole thing takes well over a year.
It will be a really big piece in the end. The sculpture will be a third larger than life-size. As Dick was a big man, and as he'll be depicted wearing a sou'wester and buoyancy aid, it will be quite large.
I began by hunting for old photos of Dick, but it was quite difficult to get his true character from old photos as they were all taken at formal occasions like weddings and funerals and everyone looks really stiff!
I got my son to model for me so I could get the action aspect of the sculpture right. Dick will be leaning into the wind, fighting to stand upright on a rolling deck. The plinth of the sculpture is a huge rock, precariously balanced on an angle, facing out to sea.
I hope the people of Moelfre will like it. Everyone's been really helpful and positive so far, but you never know. I hope I've caught Dick's character and that it will be a great memorial to him and all he did."

I think it is the most evocative sculpture I have seen and everytime I go to Angelsey I go to see it and wonder at Sam Holland's skill.

I grew up with Derek Evans, younger son of Dick. We went to Llanallgo Primary School (Moelfre) together and later to school at Amlwch. On the day the "Hindlea" disaster a buzz went round school (Amlwch) and so we, together with about six others 'dodged' and hitched a lift to Moelfre on a lorry to see the events. Next day I went on the wreck and still have a small 'trophy'.
Having been at the unveiling of the Dick Evans monument yesterday, I can only say that I am astounded at the wonderful likeness of the character and the man. very big WELL DONE to Samantha.

Oh, how I wish I could see the finished sculpture! I knew Dick Evans well as a child growing up in Moelfre. He was, indeed, a wonderful human being.
