When Llangefni school chums Bedwyr Morgan, Peter Elias Jones and I formed Mojo 20 years ago we wanted to be craftsmen in the studio and onstage. We wanted perfection, we wanted vocal harmonies and slick playing and production just like our American musical heroes. We got off to a good start, releasing our debut four-song cassette exclusively on BBC Radio Cymru.
Two years later, in 1988, we cut a full-length album - the last Welsh language LP record, as CDs were taking over. We recorded the album live in the studio, just as we'd been playing the songs on the road - we'd been awarded the support slot on Jim O'Rourke's Y Bont tour featuring Swansea legend Terry Williams and Irish folk supremos Donal Lunny and Davy Spillane.
We were given the best start possible - five gigs, night after night, all over Wales. Two years later, in 1990, we released our debut Welsh language rock CD Awn Ymlaen fel Hyn.
Gig after gig followed, as well as many TV shows, raising the band's profile all over Wales, and our plan to recreate our studio sound onstage remains to this day one of our strongest assets.
It took six years to release the follow-up album Tra Môr... and then we decided to release our "American-language" album Highway to your heart (2001) which was praised all over the place.
Many an exciting gig followed, most notably the Celtic Film Festival in Tralee, County Kerry, in the spring of '98.
Were I a time traveller I'd love to re-live that particular trip, as well as our gig at the London Welsh Centre.
Another highlight was our prestigious support slot for the Beach Boys in front of 6,000 souls at the Faenol Summer Pops during the summer of 2004.
Looking back, the time has flown by so quickly; we've produced four albums and 12 children as well as reproducing the live sound we always wanted.
We're looking forward immensely to sharing the stage with the fabulous Bellamy Brothers during the North Wales Country Festival at the North Wales Theatre in Llandudno in August, as well as returning to the studio to create a brand new album.
Mojo will appear at a star-studded gig with Anglesey's finest talent on May 6 (2006) at Mona to celebrate 100 years of Eisteddfod Mon.
