Dragon's Tail

Bardsey Island

Last updated: 22 February 2007

A five-part series follows the lives of peninsula folk, beginning with the Evans family who spend part of the year on Bardsey.

The Llŷn Peninsula is also referred to as The Dragon's Tail - a name it has acquired because of the patterns the famous mountain range in the region form.

This stunning landscape that juts out from the north west corner of Wales, with its rich and dramatic scenery features in a brand new five-part series, The Dragon's Tail.

Viewers will be taken to the heart of this diverse community and into the homes and lives of the people who call it home - looking at the issues they face day-to-day, their struggles, their successes and much more.

The first episode follows the Evans family as they prepare for their annual move from the mainland to the small island off the coastline - Ynys Enlli or Bardsey Island.

One and a half miles long and half a mile wide, to the Evans family Bardsey Island is a place that holds a very special meaning - somewhere that is in their blood, a haven that touches them and draws them back year after year.

"This island is different. It's got a dimension to it that [other] islands don't seem to have - they seem dead places to me. The way of life for people on Bardsey must continue. I'd be worried about the island's way of life dying out," says a passionate Colin Evans.

Viewers will see Colin talk of his love for the island and follow him as he battles against the clock to finish everything in time for the big move. The total contrast to life of the urban man is something that Colin and his family relish. Bardsey is somewhere they can't imagine not being.

Colin's main task is a true labour of love - the construction of a boat big enough to transport livestock to the island - a design he has been working on for five years. If the boat doesn't get finished on time, he doesn't make his money.

With the deadline approaching the race is on and viewers will see how he makes last minute alterations to finish the necessary preparations. The big question that has locals holding their breath, however, is whether the boat will sink or float.
