Talk of the town

Chatting in Ancaster Square

Last updated: 28 April 2006

There's more to the title of one of former Llanrwst band Y Cyrff's best known songs than you may realise, as Patricia Williams explains.

" 'Cymru , Lloegr a Llanrwst' or Wales, England and Llanrwst..have you ever wondered why? Well, Llanrwst was made a free borough by Llewelyn and even has its own coat of arms and its own flag!

In 1947 the local council made a submission to the UN for a seat on the security council, as Llanrwst was an independent state within Wales. The chairman and secretary of the Llanrwst Historical Society have now obtained proof of this fron the UN in New York, and recently the people of Llanrwst were given the first sight in hundreds of years of their very own flag.

'Passport to Pimlico'? No, a passport to Llanrwst. It makes a change from hitting national headlines with flooding. The flag, which is very large, will be on display in the almshouses, for all to see.

Did you know that at one time more people lived in Llanrwst than any other place in Wales...even Cardiff?"
