I'm trying to find any information on my GG grandfather Dafydd Jones, an evangelist and Salvation Army'ist from around 1900-1905. He lived at Ty Canol, Bethddu, Llanwrst. I'm told he was reknowned for his fire and brimstone speeches and was in a book called History of the Lynfi Valley in 1982.

My great-grandparents, George & Elizabeth Jones, ran the Coach & Horses Inn on Watling Street in Llanwrst between 1884 and 1901. Can anyone tell me about this inn and do any pictures exist?

Hi Llinos, I wonder if our ancestors passed each other on the way over the mountains, as my gt gt gt grandfather came to the Nant from Llanllechid. Stranger things have happened!

Hi Llinos,Firstly Tybrith was a township in the parish of Llanrwst later divided into Tybrith Ucha and Tybrith Isa. When you say De Nant, if it is not The Nant it could be the southern part of the Nant. This is an area on the Caernarfonshire side of Llanrwst (the river being the boundary between Denbighshire and Caernarfonshire in the days of the old counties.) It is a lovely area high up on the slopes of the valley, now a wooded area. The community here mainly scratched a living from farming a few acres or working in the lead mines. Before the opening up of the mines folk scratched at their own patch on the surface to obtain the lead ore. There are beautiful lakes up there too. I have special love for the Nant because that is where my paternal family lived and worked. It was a strong community, everyone looking after each other, scattered though the houses were. The nant is on the opposite side of the valley to Tybrith. I hope this helps somewhat.

Alfred Glendening senior, also known as Alfred Augustus II, began life as a railway clerk. He exhibited in the Royal Academy and many rival galleries which opened at that time. His son and pupil was Alfred Glendening Jnr.If you type his name into your search engine you will find many sites showing his paintings and stating where thet were painted. The Tate Gallery in London has one of his paintings.

Does anyone know where I might find any reference at all to a London-based Victorian artist called Alfred Glendening? He painted all round Snowdonia betwen about 1865 and 1905. Did he teach painting to a local family? Did he sell his paintings in a local art shop in Betws-y-Coed or elsewhere? He obviously loved the area and painted lots of different scenes. Is there an archive of photographs that might help identify his scenes?

Very interesting site. I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me anything about De Nant as my Ggggrandfather was living there at the time of his marriage to Lowry Owens of Ty Brith his name was Ellis Evans. I would be very gratefull.

Thanks Patricia for your comments. It could be Lower Mill , Llanwrst, I'm not certain. I have found entries in the parish registers of children born to my gt gt gt grandfather at Lower Mill, Trefriw. I imagine there can't be more than one 'Lower Mill' in close proximity?

Hi Barbara, Capel Seion is in Llanrwst not Trefriw. There is a Felin Isa (Lower Mill) in Llanrwst, although not a working mill any more. It is now a builders yard. the small terrace of cottages along the road opposite is also called felin Isa. Is this the place you mean?

Anyone know of an old mill called 'Lower Mill' in Trefriw near Llanwrst? I know there is a Lower Mill rd in the area ?My gt gt gt grandfather ,David Evans, was the miller there between 1816 and 1832. He was a member of the sieon chapel there also along with his wife Elizabeth ( nee Thomas).

Carol, When that particular graveyard was in use there were over 100 small houses in that area. It was there before those two houses were built. In fact there were three chapels and a mission room which served those streets. Only one chapel is still open for services, the mission room was demolished and a surgery built, Capel Coch is now the red brick building which houses the lovespoon factory and the old Tabernacle chapel to which the graveyard belonged was demolished long ago. Hope this explanation helps a little! I am so glad that you enjoy coming to Llanrwst.

My husband and I spend 10/12 weeks a year in your lovely town of Llanrwst. We often walk down Scotland Street and have been wondering what on earth a graveyard is doing in between two houses in the Street??
