Cefni Bike Club

Last updated: 02 June 2006

Clwb Beicio Cefni (Cefni Bike Club) are encouraging others to join them. They marked their second anniversary with a day trip to Wicklow, Ireland, arriving in Glen Cullen in good time for lunch and a pint of Guinness.

Hywel Meredydd, events organiser for the club, said: "We cycled about ten miles down the coast to the south of Dun Laoghaire before turning for Glen Cullen and stopping in Johnny Foxes, the highest pub in Ireland - which was obviously a really popular place for cyclists to have a rest! The scenery there is beautiful.

"After that, we cycled all the way down the hill, back to the port for 3:30, and we were back at the Cefni Festival by nightfall. It was a lovely ride of about 30 miles in all."

The club is open to everyone of all ages and abilities who'd like to get to know the local area on a bike.

"We organise cycling trips every month and some are easier than others." said Hywel.

For further information, contact Hyewl Meredydd on 01248 750323 or email pererin@hotmail.com.

The club now holds a weekly ride of 25 to 30 miles, departing from Capel Cildwrn, Llangefni, at 9.30am every Saturday. The route is decided on the day and new members are welcome to join.

Here's what some of the members have to say about cycling with the club:

Ken on his bike

Ken
I enjoy the atmosphere of all the cyclists in the club - the friendliness and how well everybody gets on. All thanks to Hywel

Kath
I remember the first trip up Bodafon Mountain and how difficult it was! Thanks to Geraint for the cuppa and the chocolate in Capel Coch.

Llinos
I enjoy the socialising. Thanks to Ken for encouraging those at the back and helping everyone to stay together.

Eurwyn
The accident in Holyhead! I remember coming round from the concussion and seeing a schoolboy standing there! I lost half an ear at the bridge in Holyhead. Also remember the shame of not catching Harvey up in the Wicklows!

Huw Idris
The Wicklows in the rain - camaraderie in a crisis!

Kath and Llinos on their bikes

Hywel
I'm glad we encouraged kath and Llinos to come on a more difficult trip, like 100 miles around Anglesey or 80 miles from Chester. That's the spirit of the club - we're not competitive - we need more inexperienced people to join. Also local people, Welsh and non-Welsh speakers.

Dafydd
I've really enjoyed myself after being on two trips with the club. Great to see people of all shapes and sizes on bikes.

Jenny
I've come to know lots of really nice people through the club. It's nice to have a chat while cycling and the trips are always really varied, they're always fun and a bit of a challenge.
